well thank you, but that doesn't help if all of my music library (over 120 gigs) need to be copied to back it up, that will take for ever, I think they are fat 32. The Usb may also be it though.

Most of the time the problem can be solved by using a cable that is really short and of good quality.

or try another usb slot and see whether the problem repeats.

Now if the external drive is FAT (most of them come from factory as FAT formatted) and u are trying to copy files grater than 4GB, it will fail as FAT cannot recognize files larger than 4GB. SO you may try to format the external drives into NTFS, if thats the case.

Well, you can convert FAT into NTFS without losing data.

your windows 7 is trying to use the native driver for usb hard drive, but its having a hard time installing it so thats why you are getting it hasnt installed properly, you may want to install a driver specifically from your HDD manufacturer try to look for the driver on the website. you can also use the driver for vista on 7. hope that helps

I bought a external hard drive and want to backup my dvd's on it. What do I need in order to do this?

All you need is a good working DVD ROM and a 2.0 usb port.

Plug in your hard drive to the usb port.
It should install and be ready to use in a few minutes.
Insert your DVD's
Open My Computer and open your dvd disk (right click on the icon and choose open)
Open My Computer again but this time open your newly inserted hard drive (there will be an icon naming the drive)
Now, just use copy / paste from the dvd to the hard drive (you may have to create folders on the hdd to keep it organized)

Hope this helps.

Not enough disk space to copy

Scan the drive due to possibly virus managing your disk drive. Virus can easily access through USB hard drives. If not solve the problem, so its better to format.

Backup question

Once you save the data on the external drive it will stay there until you delete it from the external drive. I personally run (2) 1 terabyte external drives and I save My data on 2 separate drives. I have had them fail in the past. This is the only way to ensure you will always have a good copy no matter what. At the time I had only 1 500gb external hard drive and it was nearly full. I bumped it when it was running and lost every thing I had! With the low cost of external drives I recommend buying two of what ever capacity you require and making redundant backups, this will assure you your data will be safe.
