Inside fan motor should be checked. Take a piece of paper and hold it to your return. If it isn't pulling the paper in you have a bad fan motor. Also check to see if the large line on your outside unit has ice.

It is 106 degrees outside, I have a a/c unit which is cooling at 75 degrees in a 1180 square foot townhouse apartment, this seems like the unit is doing all it can with the excessive heat, is it

Unfortunately, 7000 Btu's will not cool 1180 sq ft. At best, it's rated for 400 sq ft, as it's only rated as a "Room Air Conditioner". To cool 1180 square feet, you'll need at least 30,000 Btu's (like in Central Air Conditioning) or 4 more window units spread out throughout the condo. It takes more Btu's to cool, than it does to heat.

I really sorry. I wish I had better news for you. Thanks for choosing FixYa.

I had a Heating and Air Conditioning Service my A/C unit in my home. I was wondering what is the going rate fro the Freon per pound?

A 30lb bottle or R22 Refrigerant your cost would be $650. As a Licensed Refrigeration Mechanic, I would charge 4 hour minimum for leak check and repair. The hourly charge is $75 and the Refrigerant which is extra to the price is $35 - 40 per pound. As the price of R22 Refrigerant goes up in price as it is being phased out per Government Regulations, you will see $75 - $100 per pound +. As for my pricing, my fellow workers say I charge too cheap. If you take $650 and divide it by 30, it would be $22/pound, but it can only be delivered to you and charged into your unit by a Licensed Refrigeration Mechanic...then the labor comes into effect for all of this. So in an nutshell, if you were charged $30 - $75 / pound , I think you did well.
I hope this clears it up.

I just had a new a/c - heat pump installed on my 5th wheel. The a/c works well but when I turn on the heat pump it seems to blow air about the same temperature as inside the coach. I seem to hear the...

Hi; I hope You called a company that will honor any warranty on the heatpump. Sounds to Me like I would contact the original installer for more help or free replacement. Also at 55 or 75 degrees outside The heatpump should be providing toasty air. Only at close to freezing temps will You get a reduction in warm air and then the heat strips will help out then also check to see if the unit has outside air dampers and make sure they are closed..alpharome416

My air conditioner will kick on but will stay on and not

The thermostat is not functional, therefore its not cutting off the compressor once the room air gets cooled to the temp setting of the thermostat, also the refrigerant gas may have leaked out some but not the entire refrigerant gas(freon, CF4, etc.), keeping the compressor running contentiously to come down to the set temp..............sodeep

Air conditioner wont cool below 75 degrees

Hi, Does thermostat on a/c goes lower than 75? put hands close to air coming from a/c is it cold, like 50, if it's cold like 50, maybe you a/c are to small for space, check a/c b.t.u's ( british thermal units) how many b.t.u's is your a/c , there are a chart, for size of room and how many b.t.u's you'll need to cool space (room), or possible if air coming from a/c are 75, your compressor could be short cycling, it hard to tell when fans are working, listen carefully to hear if compressor makes clicking sound, place thermometer close to a/c vent and let me know temp, maybe there's freon leak. let me know temp of air coming out from a/c, then i could tell you exactly what's problem. good luck.

When do you know to add coolent to a central cooling unit

You dont add coolant to centrl air systems. They have to be charged with the appropriate refrigerant by an EPA certified technician. If the unit seems to not be cooling sufficiently that would be your sign to call someone. this is generally an item checked on an annually cooling heating inspection and tune up. Unless the unit is very old or leaking refrigerant somewhere there really shouldn't be an issue since it is a closed system. Be sure you need a recharge before asking for one, it is not cheap by any means, depending on the type of refrigerant it can run you anywhere from 25-55 dollars per pound and the typical system takes 6-10 pounds to charge fully.
