Dear friend the problem is really very very common problem.

Generally system restarts suddenly due to OS (here Windows XP) problem, RAM proble, SMPS problem - but here definitely the restart is due to OS problem and you must re-install Windows XP. And for that you must need a CD/DVD drive or writer. Please buy/collect an external optical drive(CD/DVD/CDW/DVDW) - and re-install or repair the OS.

N.B.- 1. Many times we found in the process of installing Windows XP the partition containg Windows XP damaged logically - so you must re-install OS.

FOR ADVANCED USERS
----------------------------------
If the partition is lost and you are facing this restart problem - you may recover the partition - and before you may use Knoppix linux CD to recover the valued documents. then you remove the HDD from Laptop and run data/partition recovery software in another hard disk attaching this faulty HDD there. You may recover the partition and autometically the restart problem will be solved.

I think I have given you all possibl;e suggetions - please try very carefully - and you may recover the documents also.

My 13 year old son laptop need be reset like new

There are a couple possible solutions to your problem. If the computer will still turn on and load windows, and I assume you are using Windows XP, you can try doing a system restore. To do this, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and select System Restore. If system restore is enabled, you should be able to choose a date in the past when the laptop was working properly and restore the computer to that date. If you want to completely reload windows, you will need a Windows XP installation disc. Load the disc in the CD or DVD player and reboot the computer. You should see a screen asking you to press any key to boot from CD, go ahead and press Enter. You will now enter setup where you can reformat the hard drive and reload windows XP. Follow the on-screen instructions to delete any old partitions, and then create a new partition and format it using NTFS. The windows XP installation will continue after the hard drive is formatted. If, when you reboot the computer with the installation disc in the drive, you are not prompted to boot from CD, you may need to reboot and press F2 or F12 to change the boot selection to the CD or DVD drive so it will load the CD first before it tries to load your original Windows installation.

I have a dell smart step 100 d its constantly rebooting

Hello.

Even though you said that you changed every piece of hardware, just for good measure I wanted to tell you that there are three reasons that a computer reboots itself: 1. Memory, 2. Power supply 3. Operating system problem, such as malware.

Hope that helps, although you may have done the above.

In bios you need to change the boot sequence making your DVD drive 1st on the list. Once you do this save & exit. Then put the setup dvd in & reboot. Good luck & hope this helps you out.

tap f8 as the PC starts up and try the option "Last Known good configuration", if that doesn't work, try to enter safe mode using same procedure and try the system restore program when it prompts you,

Reboot, at reboot look for the F button option to "enter setup", press F? button. Navigate to boot options, choose safe mode, save changes exit. When os comes up and is stable click start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system restore. Choose date before issue arises and click next/ok/continue. When restore is complete reboot, enter DOS enviroment(F button option "enter set up"), choose normal boot, save changes and exit.

If you have IE6, click on START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, ADD REMOVE PROGRAMS, ADD REMOVE WINDOWS COMPONENTS, and uninstall IE (Internet Explorer). Reboot. Go back and reinstall IE. You may need the original XP CD. Borrow one from a friend if you can.
