I know this code has something to do with the saddle-stitch unit because the machine will bypass the whole unit and continue working. I poked around in the unit and didn't see anything obviously wrong but if I could find out what the code means, it might point me in the right direction.

SC741 means 1,000-sheet Finisher Error in Saddle. You'll need to check the Stitching Area, Optional Paper Tray Unit. If the tray unit is fine then check the stitching area as well for any paper stuck or bits of paper If there is no paper then it is due to LCT Main Motor Error. You'll need to check the LCT motor whether it is jammed or not. Hope this helps...

Are you sure that the original documents fed through properly? If the document feeder double feeds then the machine will think that there is only one document, the first one. If the machine does not through up an error then this may well be the problem. Check with normal copying first. Also remember, you would need at least 5 or more documents to make a booklet as each page has 4 A4 pages reduced to A5.
It's called "Manual Bypass paper lifting failure". The manual says to check Tray 2 vertical transport motor. Check the wires to see if the are okay. Pull out tray 2, remove back cover, remove wire assembly from 4 wire saddles, remove 2 screws and the motor assembly. The should be 2 motors on the assembly and the one u need to look at is the bottom one. hope this helps.
It took me a moment or two to find the explanation to this error. It appears you have a saddle stitch finisher as that distinguishes the error code. Canon does not lump all error codes together (concerning all available peripherals) in one spot. In brief, the code means that the second feed motor (which will initialize at start up/and only pertains to the saddle stich feature) was not recognized as acting properly. When the machine starts up it checks a tremendous amount of inputs and outputs and the second feed motor (m8) is one of those. The controller pcb of the finisher told the main controller of the copier that "m8" did not perform it's function. To simplify the diagnostics, either the motor did nut turn, or the shutter it drives is bound, or the finisher pcb has lost its mind, or best of all the copier is misinterpretting the data from the finisher pcb. I know this does not fix your problem, but at least you know where to look and what to look for. And if "copier dude" (which I am one) says you need a new SPLEEN you can tell him to go to hell !!! I wish I could be of more help.....and I can be for a nominal fee.......( plane tickets, hotel,mixed drinks) lol
