tom tom one wont switch on tried reset for 20 secs with and without sd card, no go

  • crauckis Apr 16, 2009

If I let mine sit for just a week, it won't turn on. I plug it in for maybe half an hour and then it starts misbehaving...

Hold down button for 10 seconds and I finally get the opening screen. Period. Nothing more.

Hold down button for another about 20 seconds and it finally turns off again.

Hold down button for 15 seconds and it goes to what looks like the ROM information screen. Where it sits dead again.

Hold down the button for another about 5 seconds, and it goes to a Green Screen of Death. Where it stays until the battery runs down or until I hold down the button for another 10 seconds and it will turn off again. But if I hold down the button for a second or two too long and it starts the cycle again that ends in Green Screen.

It does this for 15 or 20 minutes until I'm ready to throw it against the wall. But finally will turn on normally and then it acts like nothing odd happened.

I'm this close to taking it back to Best Buy.

My gps tom tom turns itself on waht could be

If you search for "TomTom turns itself on", you will find that there appears to be a problem which TomTom will not acknowledge. Mine always turns itself back on exactly (to the minute) one week after being switched off and runs the battery down. Tomtom have got me to reformat and had it back for repair but the problem remains

try making a back up using tomtom home, also create a directory on your computer and save the contents of your tomtom there, i had this problem which turned out to be corrupt firmware/ application, which after i formated and reloaded the f/w/app from tomtom.com it worked fine....be sure to back up before you format,
then you can relaod your maps

When I switch on my TomTom, SD card has a red cross?

This problem is due to the memory card not containing the TomTom application or map. To update the application onto the memory card, Connect the device to your computer. Open the TomTom Home application. Click on 'Update My Device'. This should then install the application onto the SD card. Alternativly, you could perform all the steps above without the SD card in the device, this will install the application onto the internal memory. Note: you may also need to install your maps, voices, etc after you update.

Tom Tom 910 Green light but does not come on.

Remove battery and disconnect from power for 5 minutes, also remove map card, this will reset the device. Try it out

To only way you can fix it is taking apart the Tom Tom, checking if the flat ribbon cable and connector to the screen are well in place and eventually replace the display ($80 on Ebay).
Unfortunately this will invalidate the guaranty, and you risk to damage your GPS if you are not a really experienced DIYer. Tom Tom offer one year full guaranty on all their receivers.

TOM Tom no charge and will not turn on
leave on charge for two hours, then with the SD card out hold down the reset button at the back of unit for ten seconds and then the 'on' switch for ten seconds.
STEP 1
Connect your TomTom to your
computer True True (``````````` (``````````` 0 95250 95250 clip_image002.gif via USB and open up your Windows Explorer and go to the drive. (It will be listed as TOMTOM (E) or some other drive letter).
Copy the Yellow Folders one by one to your PC. Ideally, save all the folders under a new folder that you name.
You may find that the folder ttntools and gns may not be copied. This is o.k. if they aren't.
STEP 2
Format your Tomtom via MY Computer.
STEP 3
Copy the Yellow Folders from the
backup True True (``````````` (``````````` 0 95250 95250 clip_image002.gif you made in STEP 1 back to the TomTom.
STEP 4
Open TomTom Home
Click on Upate Now.
Install the latest update onto your TomTom.
Once installed, switch your TomTom off, then disconnect if from the PC.
Thats it. From now on, make a full backup using TomTom Home prior to any updates.
Also note, that copying all the files will take some time.
