handycam utility will not work

Just installed software that came with DCR-SR85 and having trouble downloading video. When double click handycam utility, gets error message about "unable to retrieve management information"

    • Having this problem with the HDR-SR11...but it worked correctly until now. Now for some reason it won't let me download the videos and pictures. I keep restarting the computer and unplugging and replugging the usb, but still not working.

Best Solution

Took me a lot of cursing, and it's very simple. On your camera's screen there are 2 options saying "USB Connect". Only when you look really closely do you see that the 1st one is for the hard disk and the second is for a memory card. I expect you are using the wrong one..I was!

Hadn't seen the error message before and connecting to the computer used to work fine a year or so ago. Just got back from holidays and decided to download. That's when the "unable retrive management information" message appeared and when I clicked OK the program closed.
I am using a Toshiba with 6 USB ports. 2 on left side & 4 on right. I was getting the error till I swapped the cable to the right side low socket closest to me.
So the solution was simply to swap the USB cable to another port and of course make sure you press the correct USB button on the screen of the camera.

I have got trouble to transfer vidio image to my pc, whatever i downloded sonic utlity picture
( picture motion browser & and its supportring compenents) and tried to transfer it bout on thge screen apperead << unable retrive management information>>.

I tried some recommended solution - to turn off computer and so on . but all are helpless.
I have window 2000 xp professional . Please could you tell me any body who knows the soulition .

You have to format your memory stick befre you can use it.

Maybe it’s too late to post this suggestion. Anyway it might be helpful for someone who is in the same situation as me. I was getting an error message because I kept pressing a wrong button on my camera.
When you connect a USB cable to your computer on the LCD screen of your camera you will see four buttons (icons) USB CONECT, USB CONECT, PRINT, and DISC BURN. First two icons look almost the same. There was my mistake. One of them refers to a HD of your camera but another one refers to Memory card of you camera. If you hit not an appropriate button you will get a message "unable to retrieve management information"
