TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

Screen starts fade away

You can try to increase the contrast of the display.
Press Menu.
Press F:System
Press F1:Contrast.
Use the right arrow to increase contrast. If there is no change, the calculator may be damaged. But do a calculator reset just in case

Calculator turns on, but cannot turn off and no other buttons work.

If the TI-84 does not function even though you are sure that the
batteries are fresh, you can try manually resetting it by following steps:

1. Remove all of the AAA batteries from the graphing handheld

2. Press and hold the ON key for ten seconds

3. Replace the batteries

4. Turn on the unit

When you reset your graphing handheld, the contrast sometimes
changes. If the screen is faded or blank, adjust the contrast by
pressing 2nd and releasing up-arrow or down-arrow keys.

Ti 84 plus screen faded away

If you cannot see anything on the screen, you may need to adjust the graphing TI 84 calculator contrast :

1. To darken the screen, press and release 2nd key, and then press and hold up-arrow key until the display is sufficiently dark.

2. To lighten the screen, press and release 2nd key, and then press and hold Down-arrow key until the display is sufficiently light.

It will not turn on

Hello,
The problem may be due to the screen contrast being too low.

You can play with the contrast (increase or decrease).
To change contrast you perform the following manipulations.
1. Turn calculator ON
2. Press [2nd] key, then release it.
3. Press Up arrow, then release it
4. Repeat steps 2, and 3, until contrast is satisfactory.

To decrease contrast do as above, pressing Down arrow in step 3.

Hope it helps lighten up those screens

i had the same problem, so i took all of the batteries out (including the back-up battery) and then i hit the on button a few times. i then proceeded to reinstall all of the batteries, AAA first, and then the back-up battery after the calculator was already on. it works great now.
