Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

GE Microwave JES1139WL01

The paint (or other finish) is peeling on the floor of the microwave, which is less than 2 years old. So far, this has happened only in areas under the glass turntable. Several people have used and cleaned it, and it's not clear whether a cleaning substance contributed to this.

It otherwise works o.k. except that sometimes it starts turning slowly when you open the door, before you've pushed 'start'.

Is it safe to continue to use the microwave?
Is there a way to repair or renew the finish?
Have others reported this problem?

Thank you.

Chances are spills or steam is accumulating during cooking.

After steam or spills, it's best to wipe the moisture away and even leave the door open a while to let it air out.

The "turning slowly when you open the door" you mentioned is probably normal due to door switch timing, unless you feel the door latches or door latch holes may have some grease buildup, in which case they should be cleaned.

Always be sure to hit Stop to halt cooking, and never open the door while it's cooking. That shortens the life of the door switches and can lead to erratic behavior.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

Very difficult to explain briefly as microwaves are truly complex.
You will almost certainly have 2 problems. 1)You need to carefully sandpaper the area where the paint is peeling off and "only paint with appliance paint as this does not have lead in it and 2)The sparks are due to a variety of things, but the most obvious, replace your main capacitor and HV diode. This combination is the normal culprit for arching. If it continues after that, the Magnatron needs replacement as well (Unfortunately, for first time diagnosis, electrical testing equiptment is needed.)

The paint in the cavity of my 6 year old microwave oven is peeling from the top. I don't know why. Is it safe to sand off the loose paint and touch it up?

Sand off the loose paint and make sure that there are no holes in the cavity. If there's holes the unit is not safe to use.

If it's just surface flaking, it should be safe to sand back with fine grade wet/dry sandpaper. We usually respray with automotive paint in a colour close to the cavity colour.

Paint peeling

The paint you need is called microwave cavity paint. If they don't have it at your local hardware store, you may get it at www.appliance411.com/data.php?rc=277

Be sure to sand the area first with some emory cloth to remove any loose paint flakes.

GE Microwave JES1136 The paint is peeling off the left side of the turn table floor where the floor and wall meets. Will this cause a problem? The microwave was purchased in October of 2006.

Yes. If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Otherwise, arcing and deterioration can occur.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

Peeling paint

You need to thoroughly clean it, then sand it smooth to removew all the loose paint.

Once it's squeaky clean and dry, you can apply high-temperature appliance paint, which is available in brush-on or spray-on form at big box stores like Wal-Mart, home improvement centers like Lowe's and appliance parts stores.

Non-Stick surface peeling off inside microwave.

Normally you can strip and sand the old paint, get it squeaky clean, and use appliance paint. Yes indeed it is a heat-resistant enamel. You can get it from appliance parts stores, Wal-Mart, or home centers, etc. BUT if it's under warranty I would call GE Customer Relations with your model and serial numbers. They're at 1-800-386-1215 (8-6 ET) and I would also suggest you ask them for a referral to a GE-authorized servide center in your area. Good luck. I appreciate your thoughtful rating of this answer.
