Black screen A square black box appears on the screen covering about 90% of it. Approx. 1 inch boarder of viewable picture surrounds the box. Adjusting the volume control causes the box to disappear for about 2-3 seconds, then it returns. Cause? Also, screen turns compleatly blue periodically, and has scince we bought it. Symptoms like a reception problem, but behaves the same even when viewing a DVD or playing video games.

There is this black square that blocks most of the picture on the tv. It will disappear for a few seconds and sometimes for a couple of minutes then it comes back. I had this same problem about 15 years ago with another tv while living in new york but I can,t remember what I finally had to do to correct the problem. Also, it does not do it on all channels, just on some.

I work at at a school, and we had the same problem. Turns out, it a Closed Captioning problem.

We found the manual, and it states that "If a large black box covers 80% of your screen, the Text mode is probably set. Press 'Closed Caption' to turn it off." The "Closed Caption" button is on the remote. If you don't have the remote (as in our case), you can go to "Closed Caption" in the menu, and pick something like C4 and T4. That stopped the black box for us.

How to fix TV

I have a large black square obscuring the picture. You can see the picture in 1 inch border around the black square. If I reset the input switch, the black square disappears for about one second (the picture is momentarily perfect) and the black square appears again. It is not the cable box because I wired the cable directly into the tv. The same thing happens when I try to play a DVD. Any insights????

Horizontal (dashed) line across screen

On the KDFE55A20 this sounds like a bad Q-Box. I would get an estimate from a Sony authorized servicer as this part may be quite expensive. On the 55A10 model this may be the B-Block and is also quite expensive. Getting an on-sit estimate would be the first step I suggest. Again go with an authorized Sony servicer. Call Sony or go to Sony.com for customer service. Good Luck

could see the picture moving in behind the big black block or square.I have DISH sat-elite and the book recomending that I check and see if the "caption settings" were on
or off. They were on. I turned the caption settings off and the large square diappeared.

You have the set configured to display "text 1 or Text 2" in the closed captioning menu. You will need to turn closed captioning off to get rid of this box.
