    Worldvet,

for what its worth. I cant find the tfnf5.exe program to run the fn+f5 hotkey. do you know how i can download it. i checked on my computer and there are no files found on the computer.

    thanks in advance

  • newbie08 Jun 10, 2008

thanks, i appreciate your keeping in touch.

  • newbie08 Jun 11, 2008

for the second download i tried saving it on the desktop and opening it up and installed. it did install but when I look for it in search my computer no files found.

  • newbie08 Jun 11, 2008

I did both run from the download site you gave me and also I saved to desktop and ran from there. when i looked for the file in the search computer it said no files found. perhaps, I am not following the directions properly.

Regarding the laptop keys for the dvd player, I turn on the laptop and insert a dvd in the dvd/cd-r combo drive and then i slide the switch on the top part of the laptop to the dvd, a display shows DVD and then nothing happens. so I just press the play button but the dvd does not play. there's no response.

  • newbie08 Jun 11, 2008

no problem. yes, i can. there is no driver for this device. that's what is says. i also tried to update the driver but it says it already have the appropriate updated driver

  • newbie08 Jun 11, 2008

I'm not running any virus software. and, if finally was able to find the swupg32.exe file on my search. I dont know what it does as it still hasnt corrected the fn_f5 key. The strange thing is that the mouse can travel over to the external monitor and I can drag icons from the laptop to the external monitor but when i try to open the program it opens on the laptop screen. I really believe its a software issue as i have another same model and the same thing is happening.

  • newbie08 Jun 11, 2008

I checked the diplay options and tried a number of configurations switching back from monitor 2 and 1 and back again and also unchecked the extended option. Only results i get is that the external monitor goes off saying no signal or the mouse does not cross over to the other screen. unfortunately, i dont have a mirror option on this laptop thats running windows me

I do not close the laptop, I just leave it open and try to toggle the display menu to see what kind of results I have.

Thank you so much for all your help. Hope you have a nice birthday party!

    Hello,

    Just for review purposes:

You 'are' holding the Fn key down while tapping the F5 key?

Do you have sticky keys enabled by accident? Check via Control Panel/Mouse, first property page should have a check box for this if it is filled unselect that.

Yes, there are drivers and you would want to have the latest release in your folders before uninstalling the keyboard so you can then install the driver from your maker.

Which specific model Satellite do you have? Press simultaneously, the Windows key and the pause key. You should see the pertinent data at the bottom of the first page. Please send me as well, the version and SP# of Windows you are using. I will send you a direct link to the driver download.

Any questions or need for clarification you may have on the above? Please do not hesitate to comment back and ask for more clarity.

    Regards,
    Worldvet

Thanks for the advise. I download the first one but the cd/dvd buttons still doesnt work, only a diplay on the bottom right hand side that says dvd or cd or no disc. I have tried to install the second file but that one after I install it, i tried to look for it but could not find it on my computer. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your reply. I was working outside the house all day and we went out for dinner after to wind down.

I'll get back with you with a link if I can find a driver now that I know you have me and I have your model and series number.

    Hi,

There are a lot of download updates for your notebook. This link will take you to them all and you can pick and choose. Below is a link to a software update that may patch everything. But, first always make a restore point you can roll back to before updating any driver.

This is the link for the driver to control a CD from the Keyboard.

This is the link to the Software Update 3, which may just be a package and will update all that apply to your notebook. It is 2.3MBs. It just may fix several issues on your notebook. So, let me know.

Alright, to see if I understood you. You have a Music CD in your Drive Bay and the download places a popup on screen about what is or is not in the drive?

You downloaded the patch file, and did you install it or couldn't find it after you downloaded it?

Oh, and just use the comment box below to respond.

Okay, Sorry, but I'm not aware of your full capabilities of using an Operating System so you'll excuse me if this sounds patronizing: do you know how to find the driver version for your CD/DVD drive bay via Device Manager?

Oh, the driver for the full software update patch file name is:

swupg32.exethis will also serve as a link if you want to try again. It is a packed zip file that self extracts. So,it should prompt you as to where to save the file. I would create a unique folder, say on your desktop called softupdate3 and extract to that location. Then you can open the folder and there should be an install.exe file or a runpatch.exe something to that effect that installs the patch.

I've also looked over the BIOS updates from Toshiba for your model running 98me and there is nothing specific to your problem although there is an update to your swap bay, where your combo drive resides. But keep this in mind, your model was release prior to DVD combo drives and this alone may cause some problem such as what you have. You can create an link and icon on your desktop by opening Explorer and right click dragging the DVD drive to your desktop and when asked select create shortcut, you can then double click that and the select the drive with your right mouse button and choose play. It will play with your program associated with your player.

I'm also looking for that tfnf5.exe program and I'm not getting anywhere very fast. If I do find it it will probably be on a free membership site where you have to join. It is mostly tech savy and used by us to locate and download hard to find drivers. Problem is anyone can upload these files and you have to be careful of what you download.

Lastly, can you tell me what antivirus software you are running and would you be will to run an online scan of your system just in case you have a virus or malware that is causing your problem with the Fn keys. For example you should be able to open up your keyboard functions from control panel and gain some access to all the hot keys in your system.

    Regards,
    WV

The reason I asked about the drive bay driver is that Toshiba has a patch for that this is the link to it, maybe it will update your drive bay to recognize DVDs.

Okay this now sounds like a multiple display issue where the two displays are married where the second display is a right side extention of your desktop.

If you go to display properties from control panel, and enter the advanced tab you should see a tab for your multiple display options, what you want is mirror. This will create a copy of your desktop on the external monitor. Now, when all is right in the world you should be able to close your laptop lid and still use your second display. But, the way things are going now, I doubt that will happen.

So you were trying to close the display on your laptop while wanting to use the external display for working, correct? You might have to change the power options in display properties, screen saver to 'when I close my lid' to 'do nothing'.

We're headed out to dinner here in PST as its someone's birthday.

I'll be back online after 11pm my time.

It might not be a bad idea to go to this site online and run the online anti virus scanner. It will want to download an ActiveX control so watch for the alert bar to OK it. Then, let it rip. These online scanners are pretty good vs. an onboard scanner as the database is more up to date and can't be compromised.

    This is it.http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

You'll also want to have a decent antivirus program.
    This one is free.http://www.avast.com
    Download the free Home Edition
You need to then register via email so look for that link too and the key is emailed to with instructions on how to enter the key.

In the end I think the fact you are using Windows 98 is pretty much a major part of your problem. The link I posted to all the updates available can be used if you update to Windows2000, easy to find used, or buy WindowsXP which your machine can run, you just change the operating system type in the support site for Toshiba and it will find the updates. However, WindowsXP makes a lot of driver issues a part of the past and you'll find things work better and easier. The same can be said for Window 2000, which I use on my eight year old Dell Laptop for doing all this from the couch. Windows 2000 will run with less memory to start with and you can find used copies cheap pretty easy off of Ebay. Just buy from a reputable vendor.

Once you are updated and know for sure you are virus free, you may find setting up a second monitor is easier and instead of mirror you may find a command similar such as clone desktop.

Let me know what you decide to do.

    Regards,
    Worldvet

With regards to the screen problem, it sounds like the inverter may have failed. If possible, try connecting to laptop to a monitor to see if you can see the display on the monitor. (You will need to press fn+f4 keys together to change to the monitor). If you can that it is most likely that the inverter has failed. I would recommend you get a local professional to check it out as inverters carry high voltage currents.

I have a Dell D600. It starts up to boot page and after 3-5 seconds the picture disappears but the laptop is still running. The indicator light near the power button with a 9 on it stays lit.

I have a similar problem currently. Boot and try pressing Fn+Up arrow repeatedly to raise brightness. Then flick the little button right above your volume control that tells the laptop youve closed it. If you see the screen flicker on/off then its the button. Otherwise reboot and try shining a light at the screen from different angles and see if you can see dark images. If you can see windows boot up but dark, then it is almost certainly your LCDs backlight. If you can't see dark images, next try using the VGA output plug at the back of your laptop to connect to a different monitor. Within less than 1 minute you should see the image on the external screen. If not, try pressing Fn+F8 a few times to toggle the output. If still no picture on the external screen your video card might be fried. If you do get a picture on the external with or without seeing dark images on the laptop, then it is a problem with either the LCD screen, it's inverter, or the screens flex cable. Check Dell support for your systems original parts list HERE. You will need your laptops Service Tag number, which is on a sticker on the bottom of your laptop.

Hope this helps, Good luck.

Trouble with running a secondary monitor from my laptop

Hello tonyphats,

How are you trying to use the monitor? Just connecting it to the laptop? I know on most laptops you have to select to use the external monitor it won't just come up. You usually have to hold down the 'Fn' button and then press 'F5' or 'F7' to toggle between - monitor only, monitor and lcd, and lcd only.

If you are trying that, what happens? Does anything show on the screen?
