Compaq fs740 text too faint and fuzzy to read well

Firstly you need to switch to the monitor's optimal resolution of 1024x768 @ 85Hz and before anyone posts anything about resolution 1024x768 @ 85Hz is the optimum not the maximum. To change to this resolution: Assuming you are using Windows XP click with the right mouse button an an empty part of the desktop and select Properties (or click Start, then click Control Panel then click Display), on the Settings tab, under Screen resolution, drag the slider bar until it says 1024x768 and then click Apply. Also in Display settings you'll find an advanced button, in the advanced panel you'll see the option to adjust the refresh rate, try adjusting this to 85Hz. Now press the Menu Button on the front of the monitor and press + of - until you see an option called "Degauss" and press the select button on the front of the monitor, your screen will do a disturbing jump and flicker accompanied by a metallic thud, this is normal. If this doesn't help message back.

When set on 1280 x 1024 pixels everything looks great but too small for me to read. When I change the setting to 1280 x 800 or lower, words are blurry and taskbar disappears. Can you help?

Which version of Windows are you running? Slightly different between versions, but basically *somewhere* in Control Panel there will be something shown along the lines of Display Options, and somewhere in there will be an option to change Font DPI. (I think XP has a selection of either 80DPI or 120DPI, default is at 80 - Text is much larger and easier to read at 120)
In Windows 7 (and probably Vista) the path is- Start - Control Panel - Appearance and Personalization - Display - "Make text and other items larger or smaller"

My HP Monitor refuses to turn on.. It's on but the screen is black

martineillas, Go here first, and do some reading. http://www.lesliewong.us/blog/2005/05/02/hp-pavilion-f1703-flat-panel-display-blackout-solution/ Then do standard flashlight test to determine "full" or "partial" shutdown mode of the internal power supply. Look at rear of monitor for "date of manufacture" ?? If screen is black and blank, then supply is in full shutdown mode. If not blank, only black, then 5vdc ok, 12vdc in shutdown mode (bad) !!! Do some extensive reading in the fixya profiles of the technicians here on FIXYA. Plenty of repair documentation already been written on this type of lcd monitor repair. Always state "model number" and approximate total "on" hours of use when contacting fixya for help. Good luck with repair. 12fixlouie

HP L107 Flat Sceen won't turn on, it just beeps and the light flashes.

crazy kit157, If pc is ok with different monitor connected then go here: http://www.lesliewong.us/blog/2005/05/02/hp-pavilion-f1703-flat-panel-display-blackout-solution/ Do some reading and see if something sounds familiar even though your's is different model!! Remember this, for at least the next 5 years! ALL BRANDS of CCFL back-lit monitors use the same basic electronics design and operating principles to display information on their lcd panels!!! If you still need or want more information, just return to this original post and do additional comment for us tech's to read. Povide "date of manufacture" and correct model number. rate this response ONLY if you have done your "research" first and feel that it was helpful in understanding unit's problem. 12fixlouie north of Windy City.

My laptop is on and plugged to the monitor, but the monitor says no signal

You have to switch your laptop to a different display mode. Usually it's done by pressing Fn key and F8 - look for a description near this key showing rectangle / rounded rectangle, or text "CRT / LCD".
Usually there are 3 modes:
LCD (internal laptop display) only
LCD + CRT - the picture shows on both displays
CRT - the picture shows only on the external display, allowing you to set a different screen resolution, equivalent to the external monitor's optimum resolution.
