I can't get my MP980 scanner to scan to my computer. It either says it's being used already (message #249.0) or it just doesn't do anything. Everything is connected; I reinstalled and it worked for 2 scans and stopped again.

If the software (MP Navigator EX) is not yet installed, refer to your setup manual.

Do not insert or remove USB or LAN cables when scanning images with the machine, or when the computer is in sleep or standby mode.

If you are using Windows Vista:

The program selection screen may be displayed after pressing the Color or Black button. In this case, select MP Navigator EX Ver 2.0 and click OK.

You can set MP Navigator EX to launch whenever pressing the Color or Black button. For details, refer to Selecting a Response to Commands from the Operation Panel Using MP Navigator EX.

If you are using Windows XP:

The program selection screen may be displayed after pressing the Color or Black button for the first time. In this case, specify MP Navigator EX 2.0 as the application software to use, select Always use this program for this action, then click OK. From the next time, MP Navigator EX is automatically started.
    Important
If the position or size of an image is not scanned in correctly depending on the type of the original, change the MP Navigator EX Document Type and Document Size settings to match the original being scanned.

Note - The operation to be performed after scanning the original depends on the scan operation setting you have selected in step 7. For details on how to modify the operation settings, refer to Selecting a Response to Commands from the Operation Panel Using MP Navigator EX

Where is the "scanner lock switch" located on a Canon Pixma MP980 printer? I cannot seem to locate the switch "under the hood" so I need assistance.

The scanner lock on the MP980 is on left hand side of the scanner unit. It's closer to the hinge of the document cover and almost centered between the scanner glass and the edge of the printer. If you lifted the entire scanner unit, you won't see the switch. You should be able to push the switch towards the open lock symbol with your finger or thumb. The Getting Started guide has a pretty good picture of where the switch is in Step One. The guide is available on the product page, http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mp_series/pixma_mp980#BrochuresAndManuals , in the Brochures & Manuals section. The current link to the Getting Started Guide is http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/2/0300001552/01/MP980_GS_EN-US_V3.pdf . After moving the switch, turn off the all-in-one. Then unplug the power cord to clear the error message from the printer's memory. After a few minutes, plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.

If the error persists and the scanner is unlocked, the scanner mechanism may be damaged. If that's the case, your MP980 needs service. If the unit is under warranty, contact Canon. (If it isn't under warranty, you'll need to decide if the unit is worth the shipping and handling fees and the minimum $50 or so charge just to determine the problem at a service center. (That fee will be applied to the cost of fixing the printer, if you decide to have the technician continue to work on the unit.)

I hope this helps.

Why am I getting the message "the system cannot find the path specified" when trying to scan?

Hi Tania,
You receive this notice when the drive and folder the scanner is configured to save the scan is missing. You can correct this by telling the computer where to save the scan. follow this simple steps.

  • On your computer desktop, click Start - open Devices and Printers -
  • Right-click on the printer/ scanner icon and select scan options. Assign a destination folder for saving your new scans.
Please rate me if this helps.

Have an hp 1536 fax and copy work but won't scan to computer. error message scanner is already in use but noone is using it???

Try deleting all the HP fax, scan, copy, etc., software and reinstall using disc that came with it. Other option is check HP's site and see if there is an updated install package.

Canon mp 980 won't even copy or scan if any ink runs out. Is there any way to change that?

Sorry, but no. As far as I know that's how all of these all-in-ones work. If the printer doesn't work because the cartridges run dry, nothing else works either. They don't allow you to use the scanner as a standalone piece.

How do you scan 120 negs?

The MP600 cannot scan film or slides. Film/slide scanners need a light source to shine through the film to the scanner sensor. You can use a flat bed scanner with a light source such as the CanoScan 5600F, or a multifunction unit equipped with a backlight source such as the Canon PIXMA MP810, MP970 or MP980.

Getting an Error Message when trying to scan

SCSI devices are detected as the computer is booting. If your scanner was powered on after your computer was already up and running, it may not have been identified by the SCSI card. Try leavinging the scanner connected and powered on and then reboot your computer. Also, the pins on the SCSI cable connectors are easy to bend; inspect the rows of small pins with a flashlight or just try a different cable if you have one.

Acrobat 8.1

Upgrade to Acobat 9.0 Pro. It seems to work in that can scan pages for a document, HOWEVER, adding/appending to already scaned pages for a document seems to crash 9.0. For example, say I scan in pages 1 - 4. I cannot then scan pages 5 -6 as part of the same document--crashes Acrobat.

I think this finally proves the problem is Acrobat 8.0 and NOT the i40 drivers.
