Thorens TD-124/II Hi, I recently purchased the above unit and the turntable doesn't turn. Any suggestions on repair or what to check?

switch unit on to speed..33/1/3 for example, nothing happens, if remove platter, can see motor spindle moving very slightly, put platter back on and leave for 45 mins and the platter is revolving, at the correct speed.
There is a small circuit board attached to the motor, which is not a papst type, could the capacitor be responsible, for this problem, or could it be the motor itself.

    Many Thanks,

Only one place on earth I would ever trust to repair/restore/customize a Thorens TD-124 through TD-166, STS Turntables. Visit their site at classicthorens.com. Their technician was trained and mentored by original Swiss engineers at Thorens. There are certain proceedures and techniques known only to very few. STS specializes in the TD-124, however is highly adept at SME and Ortofon Tonearms as well as most cartridges. STS is the best.

Check the fuse in the plug and make sure power is available at motor end of mains lead.

Also, remove belt and see if motor turns (If the 6 rubber motor mounting grommets are failing, it may help to gently push motor up from below). If not, its prob the motor and these can be found on e-bay.

Well, with a turntable that old, if it hasn't been restored it likely needs to be. Could be the power cord, the motor or the clutch.

Consider (and tell us) the nature of your turntable. Is it self-preamplified or otherwise running though a PHONO preamp? If not, well duhhh!

"PHONO" is the only designated connection on an audio device that is literal and exclusive. Nothing but PHONO will work right on it and old-school turntables would require it to preamplify and frequency-correct the tiny current produced by a Phono cartridge. Look up RIAA equalization.

If your unit doesn't have a PHONO connection AND your TT doesn't have a self-contained preamp you will have to get a Phono Preamp to connect between the TT and any Line Level input, like Aux.

The turntable on my philco cd cassette and turntable unit does not turn. how to i access the belt, etc. to see whats wrong?

I had a similar issue with my Crosley turntable that I recently picked up... and after digging up the manual online all I had to do was lift up on the tone arm and move it to the right (past the holding mechanism) until it clicked, and voila, the turntable started spinning again.

I hope this helps!

Turntable will not rotate when in "Phono" mode

I recently was given my Father's CR78CD and, assuming your unit is in working order, you turn on the turntable motor by lifting the tonearm off the post and moving it away from the turntable about one and a half to two inches. You should hear a soft click as the switch for the motor activates.

B&O Beogram 2000 turntable arm won't go down

Check to see if there is a cueing lever that is holding the arm in the up position.  If no cueing lever and it has worked recently then something has happened to the changer mechanism.  Open the bottom and look to see if there is an obvious problem like something stuck or broken.  You may be able to make the mechanism go through its cycle slowly by rotating the platter with your  hand so you can see where it is getting stuck.

Hi...
The aux wont work on a TT . You need a turntable pre-amp. Then you can plug it into the aux jacks.

Turntable spinning too fast

The turntable speed is controlled by a belt, which is virtually a big rubber band. If it spinning too fast , then this means the belt is too tight. The only way this can happen is for the unit to be fitted with an incorrect size belt. You didn't say if you have a new unit, or a second-hand one, or if it has recently had the belt replaced. If it is a new unit and still under warranty, take it back to the retailer and ask them to fix it for you. Again, if you have recently had the belt replaced, take it back and ask them to do the job again, and this time to please use the correct belt. Be polite but firm....If you are a handyman, the job is not too hard to do yourself, and if you need any extra help, just ask, johnatwagga@yahoo.com. To buy the correct belt, you will need the name, model number, and preferably, the serial number. All of these can be found on the back of the unit. Good luck, and I hope this helps.

Hi jamz.
I see this is a pretty ancient posting so you've probably fixed it or given up by now.
I also own a CA-350 Amp which I purchased many years ago here in Auckland NZ.
I've recently had it in bits to fix so if you're still looking for a solution I may be able to offer you some help.
If so, you can contact me at martymarvel@hotmail.com
