We changed the carriage belt on our HP DesignJet 500 and now it prints with a double image or shadowed. We installed new printheads and when the machine tries to align the printheads, the front panel says "alignment error" (no error number is given).

I replaced the belt aswell and when I try and align the printheads I get the same error "Alignment error". Has anyone found a fix for this?

Along with this problem are you getting any error messages or jams?? when this is happening does the printer sound any different and finally if you open the front cover and inspect the carriage belt, has it started to fray??

sometimes it prints, sometimes only part like the top part and than lines only, no more writing.

I wrote in about this problem earlier and have found the solution to my problem. There is not notes in the manual nor are there any cautions in any instructions for this procedure and of course HP was as useless as they always are. In my care I found that when you remove the carriage to replace the belt that when you remove the shims for the slider rod on the left and right side of the carriage that it is very important not to mix up which one was the Left and witch was the right. Of course the shims can only be inserted one way but will fit either side. if you look at them one half is fatter then the other so if you reverse them then the carriage is loose so it slightly shifts when the carriage goes from right to left making it impossible for the line sensor to read the marks properly. To fix the problem there is no disassemble required just move the carriage to the center and remove the screws that hold them then slide them out and swop sides put the screws back.

I had exactly this problem and the play in the carriage was obviously not right. I had removed the shims mistakenly thinking it would aid removal of the carriage assy and must had put them back wrongly.
I think they are interchangeable, but they have to be the right way up. The position that is more difficult to assemble is the correct way.
There is some play in either case, but when it is the wrong way it is sloppy and running printhead alignment will fail.
Pity its not mentioned in the maintenace manual

Check the carriage motor gear (drives the belt) make sure the remains of the old belt have been cleaned out and that the belt is tensioned properly.
If this don't cure the fault, replace the carriage assembly.

Notate the error and put it in a search. Since it appears to be a server error, remove then reinstall the driver software.

The service station on the printer has likely failed. This is the part of the printer that cleans the printheads to maintain print quality. Replacing this item requires diassembly of the printer and requires a certain amount of technical ability. If you are not afraid to take this on, you will need to contact HP and order Part Number C7769-60149.

If you are going to take this on yourself, post back and I can send you some instructions on the actual replacement of the service station.

Or contact an HP Designjet technician and have them replace it for you.

Try putting the print heads in a ziplock bag with a wet paper towel for a couple of days and then run head recovery.

What version of Word do you have? What OS are you using?

Can you append a print to file to this thread so that I can see what data the printer is being sent?

Broken printing

Try first replacing the ink cartridges. If you have done that already you probably need to do a printhead or carriage calibration. Below I have incuded a link to a free HP Service Manual to help walk you through it.

Hope that helps you.
