Question about Toshiba 50HX81 50" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Toshiba 50HX81 I read some of your posts and see you offer great advice. Can you help us on this problem? Purchased TV, 6 1/2 yrs ago and recently right and left sides of screen show double vision. Perfomed the 9 point convergence manual adjustment but the lines do not come together on left and right sides, right side is far worse but the center was fine. The red and blue crosses are apart and cannot be aligned. From your responses to others I see it may the convergence IC's need to be replaced. Because this is a DIY fix, can the board with the IC's be replaced entirely so that soldering can be eliminated? Also, this heavy monster sits on a counter, can this replacement of the IC board be done from the front? Thanks for your time and advice.

Yes the convergence ICs need replacing. I am not sure if your board is still available, however you may want to check the following link, they offer a service where they replace the ICs and convergence resistors often for less than most shops come out and diagnose for. Heres the link leave them an email with your model number and they will let you know the cost for repairing yours or wether a new board is available.

The best way to get in contact with the team that can fix this problem is by facebook. While on facebook, type "I have a defective Sony TV" in the search bar. This will bring up a page that is moderated by the SonyListens Team.
Post a comment about your TV, be sure to list your model number and a description of what's wrong with it. Someone within a few days will give you more information as to what steps to take next. It will seem like a lot of hoops to jump through, but in the end will be worth the time it took, as Sony will offer you huge discounts on a newer TV (I recently went through this, and got a new 3D ready TV for about a quarter of it's suggested retail value). If you are not on facebook, they list a contact email address as SonyListens@am.sony.com
Also worth noting: if you have receipts for recent repairs or replacement bulbs, you can submit them along with the other info, and Sony should adjust the offer price to compensate.
One word of warning though, once you have started this process and have received an offer from Sony, you will only have a week to claim the offer, so make sure you have the funds to put down on a new TV before you start.
Hope this helps! :-)

Information on seeting convergence for 50hx81 tv

In the customer menu select convergence with the Toshiba remote.

If it is skewed and or will not adjust you have a convergence circuit problem. If this is the case let me know and I will tell you what is involved to repair the set.

I have fixed hundreds of sets with this kind of trouble.

If this has helped you, rate this solution as I do this here for FREE.

3rd lamp purchased within 2 yrs

There is a slight chance that you might have an issue with a defective ballast, I mean 3 lamps in 2 years, it's too much. The best way to go here is replacing the ballast, that might solve the issue.

Toshiba TV 50HX81

Check fuses on Power Supply board (F850, F851, F852) and all other fuses. Replace blown fuses (will need an ohm meter to check fuses). I would also replace the two convergence amps (STK392-110's on the signal board, the big black ICs on the two heat sinks). This worked for me.
