Dear jeanr:

Unfortunately your have experienced what is probably the number one error with these small point and shoot digital cameras. Only a small percentage of lens errors can be resolved on their own, such as by restarting your camera. If that doesn't work then the camera will have to be sent into the service center for repair.

Call Canon Tech Support at 1-800-828-4040 for your service options. If you are within your one year warranty and the lens error is through no fault of your own, then it will be repaired at no cost and returned to you within three weeks of mailing.

If the camera is out of warranty, or the lens error is due eto liquid, sand, or impact damage, then you would incur a repair cost. Call and see what your options are.

Hope this helps

When i turn on my camera, it registers a message on camera screen "lens error, restart camera" and then it automatically turns off.

Hi there!

If the camera is still under warranty, I suggest to bring it to your Canon so you can determine if the warranty will cover the repair. If not, try this DIY method to fix the problem.

Hope this helps.

"Lens error - restart camera" message, but won't restart

I just had the same issue when one of my children drop the camera. I'm not wanting to break anyone's camera but I was able to open the lens cover and pull the lens out and then turning it on it retracted and worked just like it should.

Lens error,restart camera

take your finger and slide it inside the lens and pull it out slightly, not all the way but enough that it moves. then hit the power button and it should work fine after that. good luck!

Lens Error

Unfortunately this Canon SX100 (and the SX110 too) has a very fragile lens assembly. Once you have this lens error problem, there are only four solutions: 1) If it's under warranty, contact Canon to make it valid; 2) If not, then have a repair center to replace the lens assembly (either the internal lens motor or the gears are damaged) or, 3) Sell it for parts or 4) send it to the trash can.
