Most likely the shop experts repartitioned the drive, replacing the MBR and backup. The only way to restore the original configuration is to do one of the following:
1) Send it to a Sony repair center
2) Get the PE or system restore CD/DVD for that model and run the setup
3) Get a ghost image of an original drive using your own PE or boot disk to restore the ghost image. (good luck with this one)

Try F9 during boot.. I doubt you repartitioned that small partition when you reformatted the main partition of the drive. Then again, the F9 function might not work anymore, even though the partition is still intact.. From Asus Support:
Using the Recovery Partition(on selected models)
1. Press < F9 > during bootup.
2. Press [Enter] to select Windows Setup [EMS Enabled].
3. Select the language you want to recover and click Next.
4. Read the ASUS Preload Wizard messages and click Next.
5. Select a partition option and click Next. Partition options:
Recover Windows to first partition only.
This option deletes only the first partition and allows you to keep other partitions, and to create a new system partition as drive "C".
Recover Windows to entire HD.
This option deletes all partitions from your hard disk drive and creates a new system partition as drive "C".
Recover Windows to entire HD with two partitions.
This option deletes all partitions from your hard drive and creates two new partitions "C" (25%) and "D" (75%).
6. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the recovery process.

How to recover data from formatted Partition?

I have mistakenly formatted a partition so how can I recover my data onit?

We all know that all our files in computers are saved inhard drives. And a typical hard drive is partitioned into at least two differentsections. So you can run two operating systems (such as Windows XP and Windows7) in your hard drive, although most hard drives are divided to createdifferent file systems within the drive itself. Generally, hard drivepartitions will be formatted using either the FAT or NTFS file system.

However, when partitioning a hard drive or restoringsystem, one of partition is formatted by mistakes, which means all your fileswill be wiped out! Well, if you haven'tforgotten to make backup for all your data, you are luck! But wait, I have nobackup! What can I do? Is it possible to recover data from formatted partition?Don't worry! The answer is- Yes! You canrecover data from formatted partition by yourself! Here's how to retrievethe lost data.

What'llhappen to my partition after I format it?
Formattingyour partition does not make your data on it really erased. It only deletes theinformation about your files on the address table. And all your data are stillthere. They're just invisible or inaccessible. This means that the files areconsidered to have been erased permanently on the partition can still berecovered. However, just take note that once you save new files in theformatted partition, theses files will be written over the files you want torecover.

There are ways to recover data from formatted partition.
Recovering datafrom formatted partition is easy to do with partition recovery software. Thereare numbers of partition recovery tool available such as Tenorshare DataRecovery (for Windows), Recover Datafor Mac (for Mac). These partition recovery program can recover dataafter deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data from the formattedpartition and locate data found on it. Within a few clicks, you can recoverformatted partition.

And you also cantake your hard drive to a recovery office where supply datarecovery service. But let's hope not because it will cost you a lot of money (usuallycost you $1000) and whether they can recover data is not guarantee.

Factory reset

jeremy,
To restore your system to factory conditions you can start the computer and tap the F8 key. Once you have the advanced options on the screen choose the one that reads "Repair Your Computer" and follow the prompts to restore the system.
CAUTION:
This utility formats the operating system hard drive partition prior to restoring the factory image. This means data on that partition is deleted and cannot be recovered.
If the customer creates a second partition with a third-party utility, Dell Factory Image Restore is not affected as long as the image partition is not removed.
Thank You,

Sony vaio desktop recovery desk does not work when I put the drive it give the message that partition not known

You will have to get the "full recovery" install discs. The recover disc only restores the system if the hard drive is te original factory installed and has not been formatted.

Corrupt harddrive

You state that you have pulled the pins out of your harddrive. If the harddrive is physically damaged then the data cannot be recovered economically. Do not try to take the disks out and put it in another drive: you will loose another one in the process.
I suggest you take the drive to a computer repair shop and see if the drive board can be changed.
Once the drive is working then install it as a slave on a working system, copy all your files to another location and format you old drive.
After formatting you have a choice to discard it (if it is old) or reinstall windows on it.

You can't transfer the operating system. You have to reinstall it on the new hard drive. Most of the time the disks that come with a computer are just restore disks. Without the restore partition that comes on the hard drive that came with the computer, those disks are usually useless. Or if you want, you can keep both hard drives, and just setup the jumper settings on the hard drives so that the old hard drive is the primary, and the new one is the secondary. Then you will still have the operating system and you will use the new hard drive for storage.

I could not start my Hp pavilion, then I use the restore system by using F11 and start my computer. Now all my files (my document) is gone. How I can recover my files.

f11 takes you to the BIOS/CMOS settup, and a system restore cannot be accomplished there. i suspect you went into the recovery console (notice i said recovery, not restore). in recovery, you have two options, non destructive recovery whitch only reinstalls the factory operating system and keeps your files. it does however changes the location of your files and you have to explore around to find them. a destructive recovery completely rewrites the non-partitioned segment of the hard drive which erases all files.........but............if you have done a backup which stores the files in the partitioned area of the hard drive, you can restore that backup with the back-up and restore utility.

The screen comes up and says Windows was not shut down properly, and to start in Normal, safe mode, etc. to choose one of them. Nothing happens and it keeps trying to start. So once I hit f11 to recover,...

If you Click OK on the system restore, the system will be re-imaged from a hidden partition on the hard drive and will be restored to the way the system was when it came out of the box. Anything you saved or stored on the hard drive, (Pictures, files, games email, resume etc) will all be gone.

Because the system will not boot into the normal mode, it is assumed that the current Windows installation is at a minimum damaged. The damage could be caused by:
  1. Virus/spyware
  2. Hard drive failure
  3. various unkown issues
If you are wanting to save data off this hard drive, just power it off at the system restore screen.

If you can, run diagnostics on the hard drive (Dell has F12 at boot to access diagnostics) If the hard drive fails, your data recovery options are limited.

Data recovery is expensive, so you have to weigh the value of the data versus the cost of getting it back.
