I have done everything the manual has said... and even done what this post has said. The Microphone works fine and registers on the Omega Lexicon, as well as through the speakers plugged into the Omega. But I can't get anything to record. The computer recognizes that the Omega is attached, but I get nothing when I try to record. I bought this as a birthday present for someone and trying to set it up for them is quickly becoming a nightmare.

In Windows, you must the the sound control applet (sound mixing or "Play Control" for Creative) to select the mic in recording options.

Double click the speaker (volume control) near the clock
Select "Options" from pull-down menu
Select "Properties"
Select "Adjust Volume for Recording" radio button.
Check box "Microphone"

I'm no expert in sound cards but I know some stuff about music recording, when sound is distorted you can see the wave you recorded as a flat in both top and bottom parts of the wave, this happens when the inpu to mic or "mic volume level" is too high, try decreasing the volume level of your mic via recording software or use the small speaker icon in the lower right part of windows taskbar to get to the windows default sound card's properties, get to the mic lever and lower it at will to get the desired volume level you need.

See if this solves your problem, if not don't hesitate to reply with some more info to see if I can help.

Where do i plug in my mic

The right plug for mic use is the red one. Just use this and check the recording level from the recording mixer.

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post.

I plugged a mic to my dell laptop but it isnt working, do i need a sound card?

No, if you have a jack to plug the mic into you have a soundcard. However the mic is probably muted in the mixer software. Go to the control panel, left click on sounds and audio, then click on the advanced button; this should open the mixer in the play back mode, at the top left of the mixer go to options and select properties, a new page will come up with a radio button showing playback or recording, switch the radio button to the recording list and check everything in the checkboxes including the mic and press ok. A new mixer should come up with your recording deviced, from here you can set your microphone device volume.

Mic dont work

If you have one front panel and one back panel mic input port, Front panel is active by default on most systems. Try front first. if that is ok..or even if not, click on sound icon near clock (double click) select input/recording. unmute the mic or check it as input. thanks

There is a crackling sound after I record.

The problem was the VIA chipset firewire card. I changed it with a Texas Instruments one. Works perfectly now.

Recording with condensed mic and phantom

Some (very) basics with any live audio recording:
  • Have a very very quiet space in which to record, with good acoustics (this means a room that will give a flat sound, preferably one with carpeted walls and celings, but any small, well-furnitured room should do).
  • Do not mix with the interface. Simply put the gain as high as possible without clipping and mix later in your recording program (Cubase, in your case). You can always bring the level down, but trying to gain an already recorded track will introduce noise.
  • If you are recording vocals, use a pop filter. When recording anything, experiment with different mic positions to attain the best possible, clean sound.

A computer has line out and that means sound out from the computer to your speakers. A line out can also be connected to a recording device or a pair of speakers with an amp built in. Line in on a computer can be used to record audio from other equipment such as a Dj on his decks to record his set. It can also record audio from mp3 players etc. Line in can be used for mic's and also you can use mic in as well. To record any audio onto your computer use line in. Line out can also used for headphones and the mic will plug into mic in so you can talk online.
