Try this,

Click Start > In the Run box type devmgmt.msc, hit Enter > Device Manager comes up > Open the Sound folder > Right click on driver installed > Select Uninstall. Close Device Manager.

My compaq presario v3700 windows xp laptop audio is not working.

I see that your Laptop was not pre-installed with XP, it was with Vista. Installing XP on it, will be a downgrade which is not recommended by them (HP). In HP Laptops, there is always trouble making the device and drivers work with retail version OS.

Anyways, I got the audio driver for XP, you can give it a try....

The Audio is a High definition Audio and we can not install the Audio driver ditectly without installing the UAA (Universal Audio Architecture) driver in Windows XP. So, first install UAA driver (restart) then install Audio driver (restart).

UAA driver:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp33501-34000/sp33566.exe

Audio driver:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp32501-33000/sp32864.exe

Audio & video is not working

You downgrade from Vista to XP right?

Installing your audio drivers on XP:- ***important
You have to install the "Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio (sp33867)" first, before intalling the audio drivers Conexant CX20549-12 Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows XP (sp41836.exe).

If you reverse the procedure your audio won't work.

Hope it helps.

No audio

You must do this in order to get the sound working on the C700 series with XP, the LAN drivers can be found at driverguide.com:

This model of Presario has an audio controller that supports
the high definition audio. You need to have Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) bus driver for high definition audio installed on the computer before installing the audio driver.
Here is the link for the Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture driver that need to be installed before installing the audio driver:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/sof...4000/sp33867.exe ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp33501-34000/sp33867.exe
After installing the UAA driver from the above links you have
to restart the notebook and then install Conexant high definition
audio driver from the following link :
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/sof...4500/sp34200.exe ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp34001-34500/sp34200.exe
Installing the audio drivers may result in an error, but continue
with the following steps to get the audio driver installed correctly.
1. Click on Start and select Run. Now type devmgmt.msc and press enter.
2. Right click on "audio device on high definition audio bus" and click update driver.
3. Select "install from a list or specific location"
4. Click next. Then select "don't search, I will choose the driver to install"
5. Click next and then select "sound, video and game controller" from the list.
6. Click next and then click have disk.
7. Click browse C:swsetupsp34200 folder and select the .inf file and click open and continue with the on screen instructions.
