Question about Canon PowerShot A510 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Canon PowerShot A510

Last night I took a photo w/ my camera, and after taking the picture got a message about needing to change the batteries. I did that, but the camera will now turn on, but it will only allow me to see photos already on the camera. When I try to take photos with it, the LCD remains black and when I try to take a picture using the view finding, I hear a clicking sound (though only like half the sound, I think) like I've taken it, but nothing happens. The LCD remains blank and when I check to see the photos taken, there's nothing there. The memory card is not full and the dile is on "Auto," but it doesn't work on any of the settings.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I have a Cannon Powershot A510 when I turn it on only a picture of a bird comes up and then screen goes off I cant get to a blank scream to take a picture or lens don't open

Have you removed the battery an waited about 30 or more to reset camera? Sometimes this works. If there is a backup battery in camera remove it also. Generally this means a service for this camera is needed. If you want to send it to Canon, they may charge a lot. IF you can find a local shop that would even look at it make sure you get a price for looking at it. Sometimes it as simple as cleaning off the electronics, or putting the pinion on the drive again for the lens. but most of the time the elecrtronics have failed. Dont ever leave a camera in storage, hot car, attic, boxed up again wth batteries in it. Cameras dont take heat or dust well. Good luck

Canon Powershot A510 black screen when taking photos

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).

To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see the following for further info and a simple fix that may help:

Canon PowerShot A510 "change the batteries"

Take a look at the following recall advisory for the A530/A540.

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&fcategoryid=221&modelid=12914&keycode=2111&id=28800

Look closely at the second picture. Does the spring on your battery door stick out and overlap/touch the metal battery contact plate as shown in the second picture? If so, affix a small piece of tape to the contact plate between the plate and the spring to insulate the plate from the spring. Make sure that the spring should not be able to directly touch the plate, and is shielded by the tape.

Note that currently Canon has not included the A510 in the recall, but if you experience this problem, this fix should correct it.
