Canon PIXMA MP780 - suddenly no power

I was in the middle of a print job when I ran out of paper. I pulled the paper try out, turned to get paper, and when I returned to the printer, it was powered down. I did not hit the power button by mistake; I was nowhere near it. When I tried to power it up, nothing. I tried different power source, checked connections, etc. to no avail.

Mine has the same problem. The only difference is it threw a few errors
first (weird stuff like improper cartridge, etc.) and I had to
unplug/replug in the power to get it to work. Now, nothing at all.
Dead. I really liked this unit too! Always used brand new Canon ink.
    Any ideas?

Thanks, but it did not work for me. Did you clean the print head or wipe it off? Anything other than pop it out and pop it back in? I'm still stymied and quite inconvenienced.

I was in the middle of a print job, ink ran out, I hit the OK button and the power went off. I've done everything I can think of, still can't get it on. Do you have any suggestions?

I was in the middle of a project and hit he reset button to change from b/w to color. The machine powered down and never came back. There was no problem with the plug.

My Canon PIXMA MP780 also now has no power. I printed three copies of a one-page document. The first copy printed very hesitantly. The second and third copies then printed much more slowly. When I went to print a new two-page document, the power suddenly died. Funny thing, I replaced the official cartridges with other official cartridges about two weeks ago. I tried unplugging the printer. After replugging the unit, I held the power button for thirty seconds and I also removed the ink cartridges. Still no signs of any power. Any other recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

Many times the printhead will stop the printer from powering up. The mistake made here was putting the printhead back in. The printhead overheats and melts the internal parts. Whenever this happens and removing the printhead brings power back, you need to toss the printhead and install a new one.

How do you remove the print head when the unit won't power up? The printhead is parked on the end of the unit where it is not accessible. Thanks

Hunh. Similar problem, though mine wouldn't power up when it had been turned off. I took the above advice and unplugged the printer, waited a few seconds, then pressed the On/Off button, and it's come back on. Thanks!

BTW, didn't mean to submit the above response as a "solution". Was hoping this might "bump" for both of us and help find a solution.

OK. So, I was doing some more digging, and assumed that I'd have to replace a mainboard or something, when I happened across this link:

    http://www.fixya.com/support/t386121-pix...

So, I figured I'd unplug the unit, pop out the cartridges, remove the printhead, then plug it in. It worked!! For the first time in months, my printer has power! I'm pretty excited, and just wanted to share. Whodathunkit? The printhead/cartridges stopping the whole machine....

Well, here's the final update. The printer worked for about a day. Then the unit started to smell and smoke (!). I unplugged it and gave up. After much research I ordered another Canon (MP850). On a whim I emailed Canon tech support and they wanted the unit back for testing by QC. They are shipping me out a replacement unit! So now I'll have two, which I don't really need, but Canon support has been AMAZING throughout the life of this product.

To move the print cartridge without power to the printer: Grab it with your hand and slide to the middle. It may offer slight resistance and while not an expert, I doubt damage will be caused.
