My 97 GMC sierra doesn't have a fuel rail or a valve to hook up fuel gage. I was told to hook up at fuel filter. will this work

could be some bad injectors...does it smoke real bad?

float in tank could be stuck or you have a faulty guage.
Check all your wiring!

Unfortunately from 1992 -1996 they didn't put a fuel pressure test port or schrader valve into the fuel system. You will need to install a pressure gage and hoses in-line just after the filter to measure actual fuel pressure. Pressure was pretty low back then 9-13p.s.i. on 6 & 8 cylinders, 26-32 p.s.i. on big block.

It is located midway along the frame of your truck.

Remove the fuel filter from the bracket on the frame rail. Replace the fuel pipe O-rings if you find any cuts, nicks or distortion in them. Slide the new filter into the bracket. Remove the caps you put on the fuel pipes and connect the threaded fittings back to the filter. Tighten it to 18 ft-lbs.

The fuel filter on this vehicle is located inside the fuel tank and is a part of the fuel pump module. As such, it can only be serviced by replacing the pump module assembly. In theory, these are a lifetime filter and I've only seen a couple of them plug so far and those were due to dirty fuel that came out of a private service tank. The only real test to see if the filter is restricted is to have someone road test the vehicle with a fuel pressure test gauge hooked up to the fuel rail so the actual pressure can be observed while the vehicle is under load. You may be lucky and the fuel filter is still on the inside frame rail under the drivers door. 2004 was the change off year and 2005 was defiantly the no serviceable fuel filter.
You can go to the dealer with your vin number and they can look up in there system if you have the external fuel filter, or you can just look for it on the inside of your frame rail.

Trace your fuel lines from the gas tank along the inside
of your frame rail.It should be located about 2 or 3 feet
from the tank.

Really by the way you describe it you need to check the fuel pressure. There is a valve on the fuel rail for testing it. You will need a fuel pressure gauge. It should have 55 to 65 psi. It will not run on less than 50 psi. If you have less then it will be your pump. Good Luck

The filter is inside the left frame rail just in front of the gas tank. You need to remove the gas cap and bleed the fuel pressure before opening the system. There is a schrader valve on the fuel rail you can use to bleed any pressure

I have been told by a mechanic that the fuel filter is inside the fuel tank. Have to either drop the tank or remove the pickup bed. Access is on the top of the tank. This is poor engineering.
