my hotplates have the same problem but also my grill element broke and yesterday my oven element broke, tip to solve this problem is buy a new stove not westinghouse

I have the same stove and the same problem with the hotplates. 2 out of the 4 only work on full or off. Thanks for the solution, although I don't think I'll get it repaired. I now realise this is a common problem with this model so suspect the stove would only breakdown again. It will probably be more cost effective in the long run and easier if replace it with a better stove.

The big element cannot be adjusted and remains on high.

I have the same problem. What annoys me most is it broke down about 16 months after I bought it. I tell you what, I will NEVER buy ANOTHER Westinghouse product.

Can't turn on the element

Hi Sandra,
Did you get this taken care of? If not, what model is it? Is there a "Light" setting on the knob? When one of ours won't light with the built in spark, we just use one of those long lighters for hot water heaters.

Stove top burners and lower baking element not heating up

If all the elements are dead, check for blown fuses/tripped circuit breakers. There may be some in the range unit itself in addition to your electrical service panel. If one element is completely dead on all heat settings, the control is probably bad or there is a broken wire. If it is stuck on high for all control settings or is erratic, the control is bad - replacements are readily available and easily installed.
On ranges with push button heat selection, a pair of heating elements are switched in various combinations across 120 and/or 240. If some heat settings do not work, the most likely cause is that one of the heatings elements is burnt out although a bad switch is also possible. Kill power to the range and test the heating elements for continuity with resistance meter or multimeter.

For the lower baking element:
Again, check for blown fuses in the oven or tripped circuit breakers. The remove any wiring to the bottom element and test for resistance. If you get no reading (or a very high resistance) then your element is dead.

Steps required to replace 2200watt element for fan forced Oven Westinghouse 688 freestyle.

Symptoms= Oven light ok, thermostat light ok, oven not heating at all or to a low heat. May also have tripped the circuit breaker on the switchboard
Probably the element
Switch off power to the oven at switchboard
Open the oven door just a little and pull the door up to remove it.
Lift the panel at the oven back wall over the fan.
See the coiled element, you may already see a defect in the surface of the element.
Remove the screw at the base of the coil
With a small sharp screwdriver flip out the clip on each side of the element at the top
Feed the element out of the holes
Note that the green wire is attached to the frame of the element and the red wire to the core of the element.
The other side of the element may have two white wires
Disconnect all these wires, maybe using a pliers.
You can check this element with a simply multimeter, buy a new element and refit opposite to removal

Electric westinghouse freestyle oven not working properly. Fan & internal light working but no heat.Red Temp light not working when turned on either. Any tips?!

This might be a couple of things:
  • Check circuit breakers...there are two that control the oven in tandem. Is one blown open? Turn both off and then on.
  • Check all wiring to the unit. You may have an open wire anywhere in the line including at the terminals in the oven. Make sure breakers are off to do this and all below.
  • Remove the element and check for resistance. There should be some. Also check the element terminals and the plug in the oven for corrosion while you're at it.
  • None of those: the thermostat or over temp sensor might be bad. Find these by looking at the wiring diagram on the back of the stove and tracing out the wiring.
  • Electronics package. Replace if none of the above.
