Pictures Readable on Camera, but NOT on computer

Hi there,

I'm using a Fuji FinePix F31fd for a while now, and only recently has this problem occured. I'm using a 2GB "M" Fujifilm xD-picture card.

After taking many photos in Yosemite, I realise that all the files cannot be opened on the computer when I use a xD card reader. However, all the files are present (not missing), and they are of the right size (approx 700kb, meaning there is no loss of data). However, they just cannot be opened as picture files. Happens to both picture and video files.

When I put the xD card back into the camera, the photos CAN ALL be viewed on the camera! Even the videos can be played!

The next time I took pictures, the files turned out ok. They could be saved and view on the computer. But on another occasion, the same problem happened to another batch of pictures. So it's a random thing.

I tried using file recovery programs, but they do not work, partially because the files aren't really corrupted or missing. They are there, but they just cannot be opened as picture files.

Please help! Thank you so much!

I have the same problem with my F30. It appears that all my photos above the 1GB threshold are corrupted after downloading to the computer, but like you say, they view perfectly on the camera. AVI videos also work on the camera but not when downloaded off the card to the computer. I am using Olympus Type M - 2GB - XD media and did not format the card before using it. If I can get these pictures recovered, I plan to format it in the camera. I do not know if it a problem because of using a 2GB XD-Card or because it wasn't formatted.

I found the solution to the problem. Connect the camera with the cord supplied. Do not open Finepix. Open Photoshop if you have it and go to file>import>via f31 or f30 and choose the pictures you want to import. Done !!!!!

I have had the same problem and it doesn't matter if I format or not.

I need to put a date stamp on my photos F31fd camera. they are reference photos so, accurately showing date/time is important

The date and time (and a lot more) are stored with every picture in its EXIF metadata. Any photo viewing/editing program should be able to display this data. To print this data, please consult the documentation for whatever program you're using to print your pictures. Depending on the program and printer you may print the date on the image, in the margins, or on the back.

The camera says memory is full but I have only taken about 20 pictures - the letters IN appear in the corner - camera is a finepix F31fd

You are taking pictures to the internal memory and not to the XD Picture Card. The internal memory will only hold about 20 pictures. You can buy an XD Picture card at Walmart or really any store that sells camera accessories. 256MB should be plenty.

You can also lower the resolution of your pictures and then the internal memory may hold maybe 32-40 pictures.

HOW CAN I UPLOAD PICS FROM CARD READER TO LAPTOP ONLY THE PICS THAT I WANT.

Regardless of the brand of your camera, place the card (xD in most Fuji models) in the reader. ensure that card is readable ("My Computer" initial screen).
The uploading package will likely display all pictures.
If the all pictures you want are contiguous, click on the first picture that you want to upload, hold the Shift key and click on the last pictures you want to upload. release Shift.

My computer is not showing when my camera is plugged in

Make sure the camera is turned on, plug the USB cable into your PC first, then into the camera, wait for a beep from your PC to show it has recognized the hookup, then go to "My Computer" and look for the Fuji icon. Don't unplug the camera anytime the lights are flashing on it.

HI I have fujifilm finepix F31fd camera and when I plug into my laptop with usb cord, computer does not recognise it.

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.
