Loud ticking noise when first staring, engine stalls sometimes when starting it unless I hold the gas pedal down

The TPS would be what I would do had that problem once myself solved the problem. as for the ticking noise sounds like a lifter is bleeding down as long as the noise goes away you will be ok. But may I suggest that if you are going to keep the vehicle for awhile longer you might want to have a set of lifters put in it.

Signs bad water pump

Most of the time when you hear a squealing sound when you accelerate, mainly when the engine is cold, this means the serpentine belt has stretched or cracked and will need to be replaced. You can check by spraying water on the the belt with the engine running, if the noise goes away, you will need to replace the belt with a good quality belt. Most of the aftermarket belts will make the same or similar noise.

I have a 2001 Nissan Maxima. The car starts but after awhile it stops. To keep the car running I have to keep pumping the gas. I'm wondering if the problem is witht the starter or the alternator.

Hello, the alternator nor the battery will give this issue. How many miles are on the car? Have you ever had the fuel filter changed or the fuel system serviced?
