I tried to scan anything and a window will come out: Computer cannot communicate with scanner, ERROR ..............
I've tried all drivers, rebooting, uninstall, reinstall, everything!!!!!
didn't work
I use an iMAC.... I sent an email just minutes ago to canon support.
So far, I'm extremely dissatisfied with Canon....
-   I had exactly the same problem and solved it by using Winows Photo to import scanned documents from the AIO to my desktop. This solution seems to require a few extra steps: I wud like to simply place a document in the feeder then transmit it to the computer for storing or attaching to an e-mail message. The solution works, however so I fully recommed its implemenetation.-   Guest

-   Mine actually did scan (twice) but then I started getting a message "computer can not detect scanner."
I was having the same problem, and thanks to the person who posted solution number two which simply highlighted the fact that the apparently software that came with the Canon Pixma MX700 unit is not compatible with Window Vista.
The reason I was confused is because the printer was working perfectly fine across the network, but when I went to scan my computer would tell me that it can't communicate with the scanner. I'm thinking ... "well since you can communicate with the printer, you should be able to communicate with the scanner, after all, they're the same device!"
As a workaround, I used a third party program to do the scan (in this case, Photoshop) and everything worked fine. If you have Photoshop, just go to file > import to start the scan. If you don't have Photoshop, I would think whatever program you are using for image editing may have the same functionality.
Hope that helps, Brian

I looked in the ReadMe file for the mx700. It said that Vista will not allow the canon software to scan, that you have to use Windows instead. I opened my windows photos program, and hit import from scanner off of the file menu. You have to tell it to import in color and from the flatbed (or feeder if you like) and it works fine now. Thanks very much, Windows, for making that executive decision for me!
I had mine hooked to an accessory USB2 Card. I moved the cable to one of the "main" usb ports on the motherboard and all is well again. Good luck!

Can you switch to a network install? My local windows clients worked fine, but now have 1 vista and 3 xp on the LAN - the "network scan utility" works for us - might be worth a shot. good luck to you both.

We got an ERROR 5100 on ours when someone tried to fax us 3 pages in "color" rather than the usual "black and white." Which doesn't make sense, because we have the option to fax and receive faxes in "color." After that happened it's stuck in the ERROR 5100 sense June 5, 2008, and we haven't been able to use our printer sense; it's now Aug 11th, 2008. Which is very frustrating sense we paid so much for this.
