You don't need to format it. You can also just convert it to NTFS and keep the current data.
There is also no requirement to create more than one partition.

In the command prompt window, type
convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs

You'll find this in Windows Help. Just search for convert ntfs.

You can convert FAT32 to NTFS, but you cannot reverse this process. If you want to set up the hard drive for FAT32 you need to delete the NTFS partition the create a new partition and then format in FAT32.

My Book essential 2 TB hard drive not recognized by PS3. It is partition with 2 ms-dos fat partitions. An ideas how to get the ps3 to see the usb mass storage device?

You must format the drive as FAT32

Note that your drive is too big to be formatted as a single 2TB FAT32 partition, its basically too big for PS3 usage.

but I think we should be able to get it to work.

You need to create one big partition off the drive, you can do that by connecting the drive first to your computer and then, right click on my computer or computer and select manage. Then on the right side of the computer management window you need to click on Disk management.

On the right side you need to find your 2TB externall hard drive, delete all the partitions from it so that its entirely free space or unpartitioned space, then create a new volume, full size of the drive, do not format it, if it doesn't let you pass without formatting then make sure its on quick format and fat32.

How can i format 1TB Toshiba Canvio portable hard drive to FAT32

Right Click on your new drive in the Computer

Choose a File System (NTFS is ideal most cases) and give the new volume a name if you choose. You might like to call it something like "Portable Drive," or "Removeable Drive." If not, just take the defaults and click "OK."

You will get one last warning that you are about to format your drive and erase all data. Click OK to proceed. When you see the process has reached 100%, you are done and you're new external hard drive is ready to use!

I want to format my 2 T hard drive from NTSF to fat 32 , how to do please help

Ok this fix will erase all Partitions on the drive, Make sure you have all data back'd up.
Open Command:
Go to Start menu > All programs > Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Or Type cmd in Start menu search box and hit Ctrl+ Shift+ Enter.
You should have a black MS-DOS prompt on your screen. Type DISKPART in and press enter. Another window will open
Type: list disk It will the display list of devices with memory storage. Find your disk, It should be in a Table(kinda). You have to locate it by its size. so look for 1TB(1000GB) In this Example its Disk 2, yours may differ.
type in: Select disk 2
Execute the rest one by one: CLEAN CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SELECT PARTITION 1 FORMAT FS=FAT32 ASSIGN EXIT
Wait for one command to complete before running another
You should be left with a working FAT32 Device :P

Hello, I bought WD My Book Essential 1 TB but whenever i connect it to my Samsung DVD player it doesn't get recognized. Any help? Thanks

Most probably the format of your hard drive is NTFS. Samsung DVD players only recognize FAT32 formats. If you have the patience and resources try to change the format of your hard drive to FAT32. Better yet since it is a 1TB try to create a partition one NTFS and one FAT32 because FAT32 cannot go beyond 4GB for files.

Hope this helps.

I have a my book essential 1 tb and i want to view my content on my ps3 but my ps3 does not recognize that i have the my book essential hooked up to it.

First, make sure that your PS3's firmware is up to date. You can do this by connecting it to the internet and setting it to update. Otherwise you will have to download the update, burn it to CD and then run the CD when powering on your PS3. Some updates can & will completely wipe-out\erase you saves, settings, downloads, & etc. Check out this web-page by Sony: ps3.com. Is your external hard drive formatted in FAT32? That is the only file format that the PS3 will recognize. Most likely, your hard drive is formatted in NTFS; which better supports large storage devices and you can use longer file names with it. I believe it is possible to format your hard drive in FAT32 (when attached to a computer), but the cluster size has to be set to a certain setting. I would suggest partitioning your hard drive into several partitions or drives, and then format those partitions in FAT32. Or just format part of it in FAT32 and the rest of it in NTFS. The PS3 should then recognize the partitions that are in FAT32. Please give feedback as to if this was helpful or not and choose a rating on how helpful you believe this information was.

My external hard drive stopped working

The message you have specified appears when the drive has crashed. Right-click on the drive, click format and then choose the quick format option and format it. If it still does not work then use this free software to delete the existing partition and create a new FAT32/NTFS(whichever you prefer) partition. The disk will be formatted during this process

TO prevent this from happening in future
1)Always use the safely remove hardware before disconnecting the drive
2)Handle it carefully and if you have to carry it somewhere make sure that you put it in a packaging that protects the drive from shock.

Hope this helps,
Sai.

WD mybook world won't work on mac?

Window and OSX - fun and joy.
Since you formatted a 1TB drive and it works fine in Windows, I have to concluded the the drive was formatted NTFS.
Here is the issue in a nutshell, OSX supports reading NTFS but have very limited write cababilities.
If you want both Windows and OSX to have full access to an external drive you should format it FAT32. The only issue then is that under normal conditions a FAT32 drive has a maximum size of 32GB.
I would partition the drive to have 1 or more FAT32 partitions and then have the rest of the drive NTFS.

Is the OSX version correct or should it be 10.3. If it is actually 1.3 it would mean you have the OSX Server edition that originally came out in 1999 and it may not have very good USB support - version 1.2 would only support 1 USB device.

My WD 1T MYBOOK

Oh boy , mac , well for starters if the drive was formated on a PC , the mac may not recognise it at all.

namely because mac partition and PC partition are two different critters.

the only method I know of to get a MAC drive partitioned and formated for a mac is use FreeBSD tools.

I can hear my fellow geeks laughing and mocking me in the background for my lack of knowledge on this one , but hey at least it gets you one step farther than you were before.
