Question about Hotpoint RGB745 Gas Kitchen Range

1 Answer

Oven ignites by itself

We have a Hotpoint electronic ignition gas range (don't know model #), where would that be located on the range?
The oven comes on all by itself....this happened last month when we were not even home....now it comes on and stays on all by itself, no one even in the kitchen. we will smell something "hot" and go to the kitchen to find the oven on, today we had a hard time turning it off.
the knobs are in "bake" and "OFF" possitions...what would cause this, it is very scarey....
thank you

I Came home after being gone from home for two days and found the oven on, smoked and burned up

  • mikegrace195 Nov 30, 2008

I have a Hotpoint, Electronic Ignition gas stove Model # RGB744GEV2WH. It reignites by itself after being turned off after using the oven. This has happened three times so far. We have been fortunate to catch it and tinker with it to turn it off. To get it to turn off we have had to turn it back to "on" in the bake mode and then the "on" indicator light and burner will go off. We leave the oven door open to dissipate the heat. The oven cools down and the oven does not come back on.

Any ideas as to which part is malfunctioning?

Any chance that the plastic knob was cracked and not really turning the shaft of the thermostat?
What did you find the problem. I know this response is 2 months after the last post above.

Replace igniter on hotpoint gas oven

REMEMBER TO UNPLUG YOU UNIT> The oven igniter is located under a metal plate. Remove the oven door so that you can slide out the flat cover to expose this plate. There are four screws holding down the plate. Once you remove this plate the igniter will be exposed. Hint: The screws holding the igniter in place are difficult to loosen if you dont have the correct socket for it. Once you do remove the two screws holding the igniter, pull the igniter until the connector plug comes out and replace it.

The Broiler igniter is easier to access. Remove one screw from the plate covering the gas manifold. Then loosen the one towards the front. Pivot this metal cover ccw to get it out of the way and using a socket, remove the two screws holding down the igniter and pull it out until the connector is exposed. Install in reverse order.

I have a Hotpoint gas range that has electric ignition for the oven. However, I don't have electric at my cabin. Is there a conversion kit for a straight pilot ignition available? The model number is...

Most gas ranges with electronic ignition aren't equipped to have a straight pilot ignition.
I'm don't even think they make conversion kit because of the routing of the gas tubing for the pilot source.

Usually you have to turn the gas knob way over to get the "click-click-click" of the igniter.
Its just as easy to turn on the gas and light with a match...or a long butane lighter.
Even a "striker" used in welding will provide a source of ignition.
A last ditch effort would be to get a replacement gas grill igniter...all ya gotta do is place the bottom of igniter on metal surface and press red button. (kinda works like a spark plug) and no A/C needed.

Hope this helps some.

Hotpoint gas oven modle # rgb746hed2ct oven does not come up to proper heat or maintain heat

The problem is usually the igniter not reaching the correct amp draw .When the igniter does not reach the correct amp draw it may allow the gas valve to partially open or not open at all. The igniters are inexpensive and easy to replace. This video will walk you thru the correct procedure for testing an oven igniter. It may be a different model but the testing will be the same. You can also enter your model # for diagrams and illustrations of your specific model. Not all models are available. All parts come with installation instructions.

When you turn oven on only the heating element comes on but not the gas.Egnighter glows red but no gas and no sound from the gas valve.

You may have a simple problem of a defective igniter. The following link explains a little theory about igniters and how to access the them on a gas range:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r401858-replacing_oven_igniter_gas_range

If you are having ignition problems with one of the oven manifolds (bake or broil), it may be a simple matter of a weak or bad igniter. Just because an igniter glows, does not mean it is good. If the igniter is weak, the gas safety valve will not open and gas will not flow.

NOTE: If BOTH manifolds were experiencing the same problem, you would potentially have had a bad regulator or electronic oven control (EOC) board. The EOC controls all your oven features.

A replacement igniter for your range can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

If the model number is correct, the part number for a replacement igniter is 74007498. The part should also come complete with installation instructions.

If you require additional assistance, please let me know. If your model number is different, please post back with a COMPLETE model number (usually located on a nameplate around the oven door, or lower drawer opening) so that I may assist you further. Some manufacturers place the model number on the back of the operator console.

I hope this is helpful to you.
