Audio output for headphone connection or speakers does not produce any sound. However, speaker system works just fine. I've had problems with the port for the powersource on the laptop itself, so it shorts out constantly and have been through 3 powerpacks. (the problem i belive may be relative to the lack of audio possibly) any solutions for either?

Re: Acer Aspire 1690 Audio output not working
For audio output: I would locate the latest audio drivers for your speaker system - a few possible solutions:
1)Best: Make sure you are connected to the internet (I am assuming Windows XP - Vista may vary): Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Printers & Other Hardware --> System --> Hardware --> Device Manager --> Sound, video & Game controllers - look for a yellow exclamation mark by any of the devices, right click that device and click install drivers [note - this procedure will also work for your port problem, most likely; if not, just remove the port, restart your computer, and the "found new hardware wizard" will re-add it properly upon startup]
2) just enter the manufacturer nad model number of your spekaers in search bar and include the word "drivers" as your search term.

Based on the information you have provided, it seems that the issue might be with the Audio Output Jack.
Usually some Computers have an additional Audio Jack on the CPU.
If you have such an option you can try connecting the Speakers and Headphone to that Audio Port and check.
If you do not have an additional Audio port, then it is confirmed that the issue is with Audio Output Port.
It is recommended to replace the Sound Card. You can also check with your favorite Computer Retailer, if only the Audio Output Port can be replaced.
Please let me know if you have further questions or need any assistance.
The audio jack on the laptop is for headphones and most likely cannot it cannot deliver sufficient power to drive unpowered speakers.
Check the audio jack with headphones, if the volume setting is high and you still can't get sounds from the headphone and the mute switch is not selected then the audio amp in the laptop is faulty.
Then go to control panel, system ,hardware ,device manager option There if u find any question mark or exclamation mark in yellow Color that means sound drivers are not installed properly please reinstall sound drivers properly
If no question mark or exclamation mark then check the cable connections of the speaker to the machine
In control panel , select sound audio devices open it there u have volume, sounds, audio, voice, hardware options
1)See whether it is mute 2)In audio option select default audio device and recording device should be same
this should solve u r problem .if it is not solved please let me know u r problem briefly
or else put the model number and brand name followed by drivers search in ww.google.com
