Failure to recognize CD ROM or USB ports

  1. Run Registry Editor (regedit).
  2. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor
  3. In the right pane, double click on the Start value name.
  4. Change the value data to 4 to disable the removable USB mass storage device drive access
  5. 5.
  6. To revert and re-enable the drive access for removable USB mass storage device driver, change back the value data for Start to its original default of 3.
The change will take effect immediately to block any USB mass storage device such as USB flash drive, USB key and portable harddisk from been used in the system, while still allowing hardware components to work properly via USB connection. The hack works in most Windows operating system such as Windows Vista, XP, Windows Server 2008, 2003 and 2000.
For user who dare not to modify the registry manually, simply download the following registration entries file to enable or disable the USB drive. Extract the downloaded content in .ZIP format, and then double click on the .REG file to open and apply or merge the registry values to system.

I have a sony 400gb usb flash drive that i cant format, is there anyway to install an antivirus on this kind of flash memory?

The drive is accessed when you plug into a PC correct? If it has its own Operating system then yes but I am pretty sure it is for file storage and the Anti Virus software on your PC can be used to scan the drive when it is plugged in to make sure there are no threats on it. Moist external storage drives are not self driven and require an Operating system to access them.

Hope this helps

RAM of 512 MB

look speed depends more on condition and cache of hard disk and size, and how much it is loaded with data and how fragmented are ur files ,

Ram does make a difference but only when booting OS and Loading different programs opening them after windows boot as ms word or other office application u will find smooth running of apps no waiting time and hangups in performance if u are enuff with ram like if u use XP 1 Gb is more than enuff but Vista needs 2 GB to work smoothly

but i will again say tell em ur problems in detail i mean where u are getting slow performance i can solve it for u anmd suggest later after diagnosis what is best for ur system i have experience in this

Pls rate me Fixya fo rhelp ! or ask for more help !

I purchased a PNY USB 2.0 Drive and loaded it on my Lap Top PC for memory storage and I am unable to store any documents with that device. I have Windows XP and high speed internet

it should be like any other usb stick... when you plug it in does a window pop up... chose open and a window should open just like your hard drive ... drag and drop files you wish to save into it space permitting of course.

Master hard disk s,m,a.r.t.status bad, backup and replace

A failure message from the SMART system of this nature indicates that a catastrophic hard drive failure could be imminent. Without delay, back up ANY data you want to keep. This error isn't going to go away, and is being reported by the drive controller.

Whilever you can access the drive, move any data you want onto another media (such as DVD or external USB hard drive) because chances are it's not going to work much longer. You need to look at buying a new hard drive as soon as you possibly can, and migrating the data to it.

Files and Settings Transfer Wizard will be able to backup your data to another media.

Pleomax 6gb USB Drive No Longer Recognized by My Computers

It's either the USB port, the drive electronics itself, or the USB cable.

First I'd try a different USB cable.

How is transfering Data and information from my computer into 1GB USB2.0(Data Traveler) done?. How do I start and how do I connect the USB2.0 on my computer to begin the transfering?. I am asking this...

FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT FLASH DRIVES

USB (Universal Serial Bus) flash drives are high-speed, high-capacity memory devices designed for long-term data storage and easy transport among PCs. The host PC treats the device just like a drive, so you can transfer files of all types to and from the device. Because the device emulates a drive, it supports any type of file, including audio files (such as MP3s) and graphics files (such as JPEGs [Joint Photographic Experts Group] and BMPs [bit map]). In addition, USB flash drives can easily support applications, CAD (computer-aided design) drawings, and a wealth of personal information you'd rather not leave on any particular PC. Even so, most USB flash drives are smaller than a pack of gum and can easily fit onto a key ring.

Years ago, users often referred to the practice of using floppies to transport files among PCs as sneakernet. Because USB flash drive manufacturers designed these devices for transport among PCs, their increasing popularity has given rise to a "new sneakernet."
