Question about MP3 & Digital Media Players

Gogear sa178 so how do i go about installing it. when i run the firmware manager, it detects my device and gets the update, but then says connection was lost. i can't get past this....

    will this program work with my device (philips gogear sa178)? How do I find the actual firmware file? I really do appreciate your help I have been trying to fix this for 2 days straight. I'm hoping that I haven't bricked it.

My 8gb mp3 player keeps saying connect player to pc when i do that it downloads all the stuff needed for it but it still wont fix the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!


First of all, I have to chastise you for not posting your problem in the right section. Every Philips mp3 player model is different, so you are just inviting bad/wrong answers by doing such a thing.

Now, that's over with... If your player's model number starts with HDD, it is probably already too late to fix it. The HDD models are
incompatible with both Vista and Windows Media Player 11. If you have Vista, forget about this player. If you have XP, roll back your Windows Media Player to version 10 and try running a Repair in Philips Device Manager - the damage might already be done, but it is worth a shot.

If you have an SA model GoGear, get the latest Philips Device Manager from www.usasupport.philips.com. Make sure you enter your correct model # in the website, or you will damage your player. Run an Update in the updated Philips Device Manager to upgrade the firmware to fix the freezing issue. Philips has a weird quirk that if you want to really upgrade the firmware, you have to also update the Philips Device Manager first or the Device Manager from the CD will give you a false positive: "Your device is already up to date."

That player is ancient by mp3 player standards - the battery probably needs replaced. I am suspecting that that player has a hardware malfunction that cannot be solved, but to narrow down the possibilites: First, make sure the hold/lock switch is not engaged. Try turning your player on again. Consult your manuals for details on what I have just said. Second, try resetting the player - the Philips website/user manual will tell you how to reset your particular GoGear. Third, download the latest version of your Philips Device Manager by going to Philips website. Once you have done that, first run the Update function to upgrade the firmware. Finally, run the Repair function in the updated Philips Device Manager. If all of the above methods fail, call Philips and find out how to get an in-warranty replacement (or take it back to the store).

Does not turn on properly


Firmware manager should solve this problem.

  1. First Make sure that you have your PC connected to the internet, as the firmware manager will download the firmware from the firmware server, it is necessary that you have the PC online during the entire the process.
  2. Run the application on your PC at Start->Programs->Philips Firmware Manager->Philips Firmware Manger.
  3. Connect the GoGear player with the PC in normal mode. Switch on the player.
  4. Firmware Manager will start the upgrade process after the player is detected.
  5. Enter the serial number of your device. You can find the serial number as a 14 digital code printed on the sticker near the USB connector of the device e.g. SFxxxxxxxxxxxx and then click NEXT to proceed.
  6. Click the START button, select the firmware and click OK.
  7. The upgrade process will continue to download firmware.
  8. Once the upgrade process is completed, click FINISH to close the application.
  9. You may now disconnect the GoGear Player from your computer.

1) Make sure the usb charger is in the lock position before trying to charge.
2) Open Philips Device Manager and try repairing the device. [connect your GoGear to the computer, open Philips Device Manager (Start-->All Programs-->Philips), and click on the repair tab. Now, disconnect your GoGear from computer. Turn the GoGear off if it is not already. Press and hold the volume + key and connect the GoGear to the computer (while still pressing the volume +). A window will pop up saying a repair is being performed. now you can let go of the Volume + button. The repair will get your device working normally again. WARNING: the repair process will delete any music/other media file from your GoGear.]

3) after repair, perform a firmware upgrade ("Update" tab in Philips Device Mgr while GoGear is connected to computer - see Philips website for more details)

Worst case scenario - Even rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charging cycles. The battery for the SA178 is an LI-Polymer 300mAh 12-hr battery. Philips won't fix it for you, but you might want to find a local repair service.

MP3 keeps deleting everything

Try installing the version of the software on the Philips website (more up to date).

If that fails:
