Question about IdentityGuard Cross-Cut Shredder

1 Answer

Identity Guard Model: SH9210PL

My shredder no longer runs on 'Auto'. It works great on both 'Forward' and 'Reverse' but not at all on 'Auto'.

    Ekse,
I have just gotten off the phone with Staples, the vendor I purchased the shredder from, and they told me I would have to wait for 48 hours before I can see all my purchases for the last year. They can only search for the purchases I made using my Rewards card, which I probably forgot to do.
However, I didn't want you to think this had been resolved yet, nor did I want you to think I had forgotten about you. I appreciate your patience and I will update you as soon as I know something definitive.

    Manufacturer Warranty
1-year warranty on machine and cutting cylinders

Sure, if you don't have warranty and you want to fixed we will most likely have to take it apart and check all the wires and components that they are working. as far as i know there is no public service manual for this product so we would have to in blind and check out everything.

but in the end its a quite small and simple device, I'm sure you can do it. let me know how it goes.

Hello my nane is Tom. The shredder doesn't work. It will run in reverse but when I turn it to forward it run for a second or two than stops. I looked and I can't see anything jamed in it.

I got mine to work by running it on reverse for a moment then sliding it to auto. It stopped. Then I did it again. This time auto ran just for a second then stopped. I did it a third time but I had a sheet of paper ready in the feeder. Ran on reverse. Slid it to auto and it took the paper and shred it. I did it a fourth time. Reverse slide auto and feed shred the paper. Fifth time Auto shred the paper without reverse. :)

The shredder was paper jammed

Hi,

Ensure the wastebasket is empty then move power switch to the REVERSE position. This will reverse the jammed paper out of the shredder. If shredder jams again, alternate control switch slowly between REVERSE and AUTO (l) positions to attempt to move jammed paper completely through the shredder. If the shredder jams in reverse mode, move the switch to AUTO (l), depress the manual forward button located on the center of the shredder head and allow to run for five seconds. If jam does not clear, move switch to REVERSE again and allow to run for five seconds.

Repeat this process until jam is cleared. If necessary, turn off shredder and use care to grasp the paper and carefully pull out to clear jam. Once cleared, move switch to AUTO (l) to continue shredding. The jamming may be happening because the cutting cylinder needs to be oiled.

Follow instructions to oil your shredder;

To keep your shredder in top condition, the cutting blades need to be oiled every so often (for frequency, please refer to your owner's manual). We recommend using Powershred® Lubricant or a vegetable-based oil (such as corn or canola) in a non-aerosol container with an extension nozzle.

Caution: Never use flammable synthetic oil, petroleum-based, or aerosol lubricants to oil the cutting blades. Some agents may combust, causing serious injury. NEVER USE WD40.

1. Depress and hold the reverse button down.
2. Put the tip of the oil bottle in the paper entry and make one or two sweeps the length of the entry while squeezing the oil bottle.
3. Move the power switch to Auto (I) position, or depress the manual forward button (depending on model of shredder) and allow the blades to run at least three seconds.
4. Move the power switch to Reverse (R) position and allow it to run for at least three seconds.
5. Repeat steps three and four above at least three time.

Regards.

Shredder doesn't want to shred in forward gear, have to Reverse first then switch it to On/Auto. Have to keep going back & forth between Reverse & On/Auto to get document shredded. Shredder is less...

Shredders became popular when the identity theft thing started happening and to save money they stopped making them with quiet, powerful induction motors and now it's almost impossible to find a consumer model without the poor quality loud motors that don't have enough to power to operate the machine once it's a little dirty. Anyway, unplug it, and you're doing this at your own risk, take the shredder off the trash can or its own waste bin and turn it over. If it's straight cut shredder you will probably be able to see the slot where the shredder paper exits the blade area. If it's a crosscut shredder there might be a door that will close over the blades to cut you from getting cut. Respect that, but open this door, and see if there's bits of paper jammed up around the blades. Wear some protective gloves and use pliers or some kind of tool to dig out the compacted trash, being careful not to damage or bend the blades. Now you should pick up some shredder oil from your local office store, or see link to order. Follow the instructions on the oil, and this will make your shredder run with a lot less stress. This is only a temporary fix however. In a couple weeks or months you will have to do this again. It's all part of owning a paper shredder. If you like it that much, look into buying a nicer model. You totally get what you pay for with a paper shredder.

The shredder will run in reverse but will not run foreward.

Inside the shredder there is a motor which is wired to run both forward and backward, the way it does this is to transfer the power from the switch to a couple of wires on the motor
The forward running motor will be linked to the auto start button which will tell it to work with the paper sensor.
When you select the Forward function the Auto Start is taken out of circuit and the Forward switch should supply the motor

After all of that I would say that the switch is open circuit on the Forward contact and needs replacing
