Question about Sony KP-57WS500 57" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

The Guns? My tv is 6 years old. Three years ago when a tech came out to fix some white lines, he replaced the 3 picture guns (what he called them) free of charge due to an alert from Sony. Now, my tv has turned blue and may take up to 3 hours before I can see color and details. The tech was called and tells me the blue one is going out and it would be too expensive to repair! I've had cheap tvs last 15 years, this tv wasn't cheap and it only lasts 6 years? Help, please. Thanks, a frustrated senior.

Yes! My repair guy said the tv would have to be shipped out to get a new blue crt and that there are no guarantees on the availability of one. I live way up in northern California on the coast. It's rural...not even a Walmart. Any idea who has them? Could I replace it?

    Thanks in advance!

My picture looks like it is in 3d there shadows on people

Older projection TVs use three separate "light guns" to essentially paint the picture on the screen. What likely happened, is one of your guns went slightly out of alignment.
You can either get it repaired, or attempt to align it yourself. It is doable, though tricky and rather risky. The process would depend on the type of TV you have. If it is a TV that uses the three separate light guns, then it's likely a few years old, and it might be tough to find instructions online for your particular model.

I have an rca model hd52w67 tv and there is a problem with the picture. the picture has a red and green picture that don't allign by about an inch. I think it is in the picture guns but i cant find a...

Do not align the guns! they are located facing up toward the mirror; they are picture tubes! covered with big glass lenses! heavy!
instead look for a red/green/blue adjustment knob on the set's front; the buttons should say: convergence or, crosshatch push the crosshatch button: once you have three vertical lines crossing three horizontal lines; just merge them using the other R/G/B knobs untill you have one white vertical line and, one horizontal line crossing in the center of the screen.
(you may have to find the controls on the remote using "setup")

I have a sony 50 in rear projection. 9 years old

Sounds like the CRT tubes are going out which is fairly common on Sony. Inside the back of the TV there are 6 knobs - 2 for each is for focus - dont touch - the other for brightness...turn down the brightness just a hair untill the lines go away.

Picture flickers to blue screen.

After a typical picture tube ages it gets a coating of chemicals (carbon, phosphor and various metals form heater filaments) on the red, green or blue electron guns. This degrades any one or all three guns over time. There is a process to "zap" or rejuvenate the picture tube. A "good" TV repair shop will have the device to do this. The cost should be between 1 to 2 hours of repair labor. That equates to $75 - $150. The only thing is that this process does not clean the guns effectively and they can "cake up" again. Think of it as a coronary cleaning, it does not mean the "plaque" can build back up. It will, and usually within 1 to 3 years depending on how old the unit is and how long it is on per day. The other alternative is replacing the picture tube. 2 - 3 hours of labor plus parts. An average picture tube (after technician's mark up) costs anywhere from $100 for 13'" set to thousands. Looking at your model, it's a 31". I would guess at $400 - $500 just for the picture tube. I like Mitsu's. A good machine. Right in line with Sony on up. (and better in a number of occasions I have seen) When the cost of the repair is over 50% of the cost of the unit, that's when I declare it replaceable at the hospital system where I worked. (Over 900 TVs) You should weigh the price too.
Hope this insight helps - Let me know if it did.

17 yr. old 35" RCA loses color intermittently. Picture & sound ok

Three guns Red Blue and Green in the picture tube of an old CRT set. If one of the guns goes out it effects that color. Sounds like one of the guns inside of the tube is going out, To costly to replace for such an old antilog set that will have to have a convertor box next month anyway.

Dominant blue

Can you post to the party who has too much green how to adjust the video adjustments? They need to know so they can see if
its just a simple adjustment.
In your case, first turn the color level clear down to where you
have a black and white picture. As in the case of too much green,
question is if the picture is black and white or if there is a color
on the screen so its blue and white? I suspect it will be which
is typical when the guns start to fail. Likely the green and red
guns are weak in output. There are screen adjustments in the set that a tech can set up that may help some, but the only real fix is to replace the guns which is expensive and requires a complete allignment. All 3 guns need changing to get it back to spec and it is a good idea to replace the flyback for reliability. Get an estimate and likely you can replace the set for the same money.

Sony KP-57WV600 rear projection

sounds like bad CRT, some of these sonys have had defective CRT issues, usually all will come and go sooner or later (all 3 bad), you can pull the speaker grill off(either 2 1/4" screws on bottom or 6 1/4" on back sides) and pull off the Crt box cover (2'X3' piece) and lightly tap the CRT's with tv on, if they flare or get colored streaks in pix they are bad, CALL SONY 800 # and complain, also could adjust G2 (Screen control for color) for short patch. Will need new crts.
