My vacuum was working fine, then started to smell a little funny like something was burning. Turned it off. Now when you turn it on it will run for a few minutes and then shuts off, like something is tripping the motor. There is not clog and we cleaned all the filters. Any idea? Thank you!

The smell is usually the fan belt. When the brush is stuck in place, the belt spins and burns. Check to see if the brush is free to spin. If the Belt is burnt, it needs to be replaced.

SOURCE: Removing obstruction from vacuum motor

Most Eureka's, there are 2 or 3 screws on the top to remove, then the top cover will come off. If no screws on top. then they are on the bottom. After the top is off, the belt and brush are right there in the open. To get to the motor, that off the 2 screws on the clamp on wach side of the motor, screws that are around the motor housing and then the motor cover should pull off. If the smell is electrical, if could be a bad motor, which sells for around $75 to $90. If the smell is more like rubber, then look at the belt and brush roll. If you need more info, get the model # off of the tag.

SOURCE: Motor slows down and makes burning smell

If the noise is coming from the canister motor, you probably have bad motor bushings. I had the same problem, replaced the motor and all was fine - only for one year. The problem is back and is due to the fact the motor is very high speed (to get good suction) and should be made with bearings, not bushings. I will not be repairing a second time as a $70 motor annually is a bit pricey, and yes it will get VERY hot. I will buy a new vacuum - not another Kenmore.

SOURCE: the motor makes a weird sound and starts to heat

If the motor sounds scratchy and is making a burning smell, or sparking you will need to replace the motor or the entire vac. Carbon brushes will rarely fix this as it is a high RPM motor

SOURCE: Loud whistling noise from back of vacuum

On the back side of most kenmore vacuums, there is an air relief diaphragm that, when the motor is sucking but there is no air flow, will pop, causing the sound you heard. check your hose for blockage, check your bag and or filter for blockage, even your attachments/wands can become lodged with debris. Often, after a few, the motor will get hot and the machine will shut down. This is a thermostat on the motor that protects it from overheating. I am quite sure that this will solve your kenmore woes, fine choice in vacuum, kenmore, tried and true. hope to have helped! Have a super, and hopefully sucking(ha ha) Sunday

Is there a fuse or circuit braker in a sunline SM-G31 grinder?

Hate to say it but I fear the windings have burnt and is in need of repair. Any burning smell or smell of heating is most of the time directly related to armature or burnt brushes. If this grinder suits your needs having it rewound would be profitable.

Vax v-091 burning smell and clunking noise

Is there something stuck inside, underneath, being turned along with the motor? burning smell usually means something got caught and the belt snapped. Not expensive and don't know if it's an easy DYI. Shouldn't cost too much to have it repaired or you can google the brand and model and the word belt, see what you find.

I have the G series Kirby silver vacuum, I was vacuuming and started to smell some burning. Looked down and my green light was off also. What could it be? PLS HELP

Your belt is burning and will eventually wear down and break. The green light comes from copper brushes on your roller creating an electrical current that lights the little green light. As long as the roller is turning, the light will stay on. There may be something jamming the roller (hair, string, paper, etc). Clean the roller off and replace your belt. If you don't replace the belt it will break soon enough. Once you start smelling the "rubber burning" smell it's and indication that your belt has deteriorated at some point and has a weak spot in it. Clean the roller and replace the belt and it should be fine.

Vacuum smells like something is burning

Ok...Check the brush roll is free not sticky..Next is the belt okay, not jamming on the brush roll making the burning smell...You could take off the roll and run motor on its own ..finding out if its the motor..

My pet hair eraser smells like it is burning all the time and sounds funny. The brush will not spin once you have it on the carpet unless you hold it up a little while you are cleaning but then the whole...

We had the same problem, and it turned out that the roller wheel height setting had broken, for no apparent reason, and was "floppy" so we had to lock it in to one setting with epoxy.

Limits utility, but it works. Sort of.

Panasonic MC-CL673 vacuum is not getting up to speed and smells

Even though the brush is spinning, you probably need to replace the belt2_bing.gif because it is stretched. It is probably slipping on the beater bar. This is causing the smell (burning rubber). I don't believe it is your motor. :-)

the vacuum is either shorting or the motor or brush assembly is rubbing something.

Vacuum shuts off and has a burnt smell

Hi,
Try removing the drivebelt, and try running it to test like this. The brush bar will not turn, but it should function normally without smell at this point. If it doesn't, you may need a new motor as I think the brushes may have worn down - producing an electrical type burning smell.

If it runs fine without the belt attatched, then there is probably a build-up of hair or threads at each end of the roller stopping it turning freely. With the hoover off, check it turns freely and easily. A small metal nail file or similar is usually a good tool to clear it.

If the roller is stiff, the belt will not turn easily, and overheat on the motor spindle - causing the burning smell.
