Question about Acer Aspire 3000 Notebook

Acer Aspire 3000 wont load past acer splash screen

So my brother in law had a couple of laptops that he figured were just fried because he got nothing on the screen when he started them up and he gave them to me to see if I can do anything for them.
I was able to make the compaq work but am having trouble with the acer, but would like to give both back working if possible.

At first when attempting to power on the Acer Aspire 3000 the fan would start and lights would come on the front but nothing would happen.

I opened up the back and the memory was just hanging there not even connected. Once I got that installed properly, now I am getting the "Acer Screen" which will allow me to hit F2 to get into the bios, however if I dont go into the bios, the laptop reboots itself after this screen and seems to be stuck in this re-boot. acer screen, reboot pattern.

I thought that maybe the hard drive wasnt connected properly but tried to re-install that with no luck.

Does this sound like a problem with the board, is this laptop gone for good?

    WONT LOAD

  • theladebug Jun 14, 2008

There are two cards in it.

I thought it might be software, but it still will not boot off of the restore discs. It just powers down and re-starts after it leaves the acer screen.

  • theladebug Jun 14, 2008

No luck. I've tried with each card and also in each slot and there is no change.

    Any other ideas?

  • theladebug Jun 14, 2008

hmmm cant seem to find the Legacy USB support, but the boot device is set to HDD

  • theladebug Jun 16, 2008

Hmmmm it could be that I have a bigger problem than I thought. It seems that I cannot get into any advanced settings through the bios on this machine.

  • theladebug Jun 16, 2008

Actually I found the system cd which must be used before the restore cd and it seems to be working okay. I am going to continue restoring and see what happens.

Looks like it might be a software issue after all.

Fixed! Thanks for your help though, you rock! :)

Hi,

Thanks for the response, turn it off and remove the battery/power supply, now take one of the cards out, now put the battery/power supply back in and switch it on, if it still does not work, do the same again but put the other card back in and take the other one out, now switch on.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers

    Hi,

When it reboots press F2 and go into the bios and disable the "Legacy USB support", also make sure the boot device is set to HDD.

    Hi,

Legacy USB support is usually located in the advaced tab in the bios, not to worry.

At the bios screen keep tapping F8 until you get the options screen if it allows you and go in under safe mode.

.
My understanding of the Acer 3000 set up....NOT A NuBEE

=========== VERY IMPORTANT ==================== Before you remove any compnents - Remove Power/Battery.
==============================================

I have found best results with a Default Factory Settings reinstall from eManager ,to be quite reliable and their system is reinstalled within minutes.
Any missing components ie sound, vga, modem, usb,etc can be located on the recovery disks, also another important step is to do SP2 Windows Updates to give the devices the correct functionallity otherwise expecting them to function correctly without giving them the right tools and instructions would be premature and wasting your own time trying to make it work only to do your head-in in the process.

Other Acer Issues....

BATTERIES.
Replace when they die or use AC power pack.

VGA SIS 760G
Sorry not upgradable for video out,dedicated/shared memory type.

DEAD HARD DRIVES
mean a lengthy reinstall with recovery disks or reinstall OS from a separate machine then when Operating System is reloaded replace into Acer Hard Drive Bay now ready for Acer Reinstall.

HARD DRIVE RECOVERY
If its important === Leave it to the PRO's

RAM / Memory.
Ram slots x 2 . MAX 2GB = 1GB + 1GB
Readily available in many sizes 128mb,,256mb,512mb,1GB and many brands,Kingston,Transcend,etc....

RULE OF THUMB for RAM,
always put identical size ram ie 256mb+256mb... re sometimes the slowest ram is maximum speed so making them identical give double speed proformance instead of half ..re 256mb + 1gb registers 1.256mb but runs at 512mb.

WIRELESS/Axis Points & Blue Tooth Devices.
Works well if set up has correct Axis Point to Device Security Protocols Established and properly Encrypted too.
There are some clever people out there who can hack your wireless connections so I recommend a hard wired Cat 5e @ 100MBPS or Cat 6 @1GPS,(I think thats right)lol.
A closed network is more secure the an open one,

LCD Screen Replacements/Inverters
Can be done.Mostly Matt Finish or Ultra Bright Lcds.

CDRW or /DVD/RW
Replaceable and upgradable,

Note from The Author.
I have only touched briefly on the most common excerises and would like everyone to underestand some problems not covered here may require different solutions for the individuals specific problem/s.
Seek advise from trusted sources.
If in doubt try,
WWW.ACER.COM
or email me,lol

Thanks for reading my thoughts,I hope this helps the understandings and importance of these basic steps

    Ok for thisone,

Load Bios default settings ,save and restart'

    DO NOT TOUCH BIOS ANYMORE...,

    Instead go to start menu,

    control panel,

    change resolution,

    Settings

Click IDENTIFY>screen should come up with Screen Number 1

Noting Screen 2 not present until you plug in Screen 2.

When both screens are connected and powered up then you should be able activate the screens individually and save the settings.Don't forget shut down and reboot to save the new settings.

If there is one picture only or bank, black 2nd screen try adjusting the pixel size to 800x600,unfortunatley this is the sacrifice for two screens of one vga card. Can't be helped.

If you have acer grid vista installed then settings are accessible thru the right click on the desk top and select from properties drop down.

I keep the message General Protection fault with a black screen when I turn my acer aspire 3000 on and it won't go past that screen/What can I do to fix it?

To repair corrupted system file/s, boot up with the Windows installation CD then -
Press R to repair when instructed.
Press 1 or Enter to repair the C:\Windows folder.
Then type chkdsk /r and then press Enter.
The repair process will take quite a long time.

Acer 3000 Series Laptop Splash screen does not appear at startup when pressing F2 on the post page. Therefore unable to acces bios. Has e-manager but cannot access bios through it either. Welcome all...

It sounds like the Acer logo has been turned off in the bios settings. As soon as you hit the power button, start tapping the F2 key until you see the test appear "entering setup". Once you are in the BIOS, look for the Logo settings as far as being visible during Boot up. I've seen this setting on other systems so I am thinking the Acer should be similiar.

Could be a bad memory chip or a hard drive crash. Can you hear the hard drive engage? If so, is there any clicking or dull thunking sounds? Both of these are indicators of a hard drive failure.

Laptop Wont Boot

Does it sound like it's starting up at all? Is the problem that only the screen turns blank? You might have just disabled the standard output. Try pressing Fn (bottom left on the keyboard) and the F5 on the top a few times to see if the screen toggles back on. You might also try to run it without the battery, and on the battery only in case it's a faulty battery or power supply that causes the problem. If not, it sounds lsike a serious problem, so if there is any chance of the waranty still being valid I'd call acer support asap.

Acer aspire 3000 dropped on floor. Random startup events

theres a good chance that the hard drive platletes and parking head have been damaged, although this is not a huge problem to replace, as long as your screen is working ok, then it is worth replacing. you can access it on the underside of the casing, in the largest compartment, remove all screws and the hard drive will be held in with more screws.
