Question about Nikon Digital Cameras

1 Answer

I have a Nikon D70s camera. I have misplaced my copy of Picture Project the “yellow disc” which installs the software, which allows me to download the images from my camera to my computer. I have had to renew my hard drive on my computer, so need to re-install Picture Project. Firstly can you tell me if I do require the picture project software on my computer in order to download images, or can I just download them on to another piece of software that my computer should have? Secondly If the answer is no to the above, then can I get a replacement disc, and if so how do I go about it? Many thanks

I own a nikon D40x and it doesn't need the software to download the pictures to the computer. But I'm not sure if it works the same way with your camera.
If you need the software go to this link, it says updater but they also included the link for the Full install version, install it then download the updates for the program. However you will need to register/create account for you to download the file, they will ask you for the Serial Number/License Key/Unlock Code so I suggest you look for it before you go to the site.

I have reinstalled the Picture Project 1.7 disc for Cool Pix L4 and I still cannot get my computer to recognize the camera.

Picture Project was retired years ago, replaced by Nikon Transfer and Nikon ViewNX. You can download the current versions of all (free) Nikon software from
http://support.nikontech.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/61

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or any other photo cataloging program.

Picture Project is rather old and has been superceded by Nikon Transfer and Nikon ViewNX. You can download the current versions of all Nikon free software from http://support.nikontech.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/61

Can't transfer pictures from camera to pc

francis5262, Have you first installed the Nikon software to your PC before connecting it?  You may be using Picture Project, after you install it, try shutting down the PC and restart it, if you installed it correctly and the projects folders you created are there now when you connect the camera should recognize the camera and ask if you want to download the images to the folder you selected.  One more thing check for updates for the software too. randy320sgi

Nikon Coolpix driver for Win98

Ugh. Nevermind. I knew as soon as I posted this, I'd figure it out! Since I've been seeing this same question floating around in search engines, might as well post it, I guess. Who knows, maybe save someone a headache.

- Install the Nikon drivers from the yellow disc labeled Picture Project:

Choose "custom installation", uncheck everything except the very top box labeled "driver." (Despite what Nikon's booklet says, Picture Project DOES NOT have to be installed to make the camera work). After they are installed, you will be prompted to restart your computer.

- After restart, hook the camera to the computer via the USB cable and turn the camera on. Windows will now detect a new device and launch the add new hardware wizard. Select "display a list of all drivers" and click next.

- Now check "show all hardware" at the bottom of the window, and select the category "hard disc controllers" from the left-hand menu.

- Scroll down this menu until you find "Nikon Corporation." Now in the right window you will see "Nikon Digital camera Controller." Click next.

- The drivers should install with no problems and no more work to do. Your camera is now compatible with Windows 98! If installed correctly, the window should look like this:

45603b8.jpg

- If you go to My Computer, there will be a new icon labeled "Removable Disc." Click on it, and you'll notice all your photos are stored here in a folder labeled NIKON100.

Notes:

I'm not sure, but this setup should work for the following Nikon models listed on the official site as well:

COOLPIX 2000 / 2100 / 2200 / 2500 / 3100 / 3200 / 3500 / 3700 / 4100 / 4200 / 4300 / 4500 / 4600 / 4800 / 5000 / 5200 / 5400 / 5600 / 5700 / 5900 / 775 / 7600 / 7900 / 8400 / 8700 / 8800 / 885 / 995 / L1 / L101 / L2 / L3 / L4 / L5 / L6 /L10 / L11 / L12 / L14/ L15 / P1 / P2 / P3 / P4 / P50 / P5000 / P5100 / S1 / S2 / S3 / S4 / S5 / S6 / S7c / S9 / S10 / S50 / S50c / S51 / S51c /S200 / S500 / S510/ S700 /SQD1 / D1H / D1X / D100 / D2H / D2Hs / D2X / D2Xs / D200 / D40 / D40x / D50 / D70 / D70s / D80

If you don't have the Picture Project disc, you can download the same drivers from the European website (the link in the above post). The correct driver for the Coolpix is located in Drivers > Clpx > EN > Setup.exe (for English setup).

Before attaching the camera, be sure it's set to Mass Storage.
(Menu > Set Up > Interface> USB) There should be a V-shaped checkmark next to the Mass Storage option.

How can I use the Adobe Camera Raw plugin after installing Nikon Software?

During the installation of Nikon View or Picture Project, your system is checked for an installed copy of Adobe Photoshop. If a copy with the minimum version is found, Nikon View will install file format filters which will allow Photoshop to open a NEF/RAW file directly (there are other plugins for YCBCR TIFF format from supported cameras). If you have the Adobe Photoshop "Camera Raw" software installed (optional in Photoshop version 7, included in Photoshop version CS) the Nikon file filters will open the file. If you prefer to continue using the Adobe software, find and remove the following plugins: Nikon NEF Plugin (Nikon View) Nikon NEF Plugin LE (Picture Project) After a restart of Adobe Photoshop, the Adobe Photoshop "Camera Raw" plugin will handle the opening of Nikon NEF/RAW format files. Please note that there was an update for Adobe Camera Raw plugin for support of D70 and Coolpix 8700 RAW files, if you encounter difficulty opening raw files from any Nikon product after removal of the Nikon Plugins, please visit the Adobe support site to obtain the appropriate update for the Adobe Camera Raw plugin.
