Question about GE JGB928KEK Gas Kitchen Range

1 Answer

Igniter Replacement I need to clean and re-seat an igniter it works intermittently. I cannot figure out how to raise/remove the cook top to do so. I know there are clips at the front and know how to release them. On all other range tops the top just raises up after you release these but this unit has sealed burners and a ceramic top.

Each burner is secured with 2 to 3 screws. It will be necessary to remove all screws on each burner in order to remove the top. USE CAUTION. Do not force the screws it they seem tight. These screws will often corrode, forcing them out could break them. The best method if tight is to move them back and forth (tighten, loosen, tighten, loosen etc. until the corrosion breaks free.

Gas oven not getting hot - glow bar works but no gas to burner

This happens when an oven igniter (glow bar) is bad. The igniter must draw enough amps to turn on the gas to ignite the flame. If you have a square shaped igniter use this part#5303935066 If your have a round shaped igniter use part#wb2x9154. These igniter will pretty much work universally for most gas ranges or ovens.
  1. Remove the racks
  2. Unplug unit
  3. Take out the screw holding the bottom pan
  4. Remove screws holding manifold where igniter is attached
  5. Remove manifold cut wires about 2in link from igniter and clean leads.
  6. Unscrew and remove igniter
  7. Replace Igniter with new one and fasten onto manifold
  8. Clean wires and screw on ceramic nuts to wires
  9. Tuck wires back and Reinstall all components
Test your new igniter. You might notice it taking a little longer to light up but that is okay.
Please let me know if this was helpful by rating me a 4.
Thanks so much have a great weekend.

My bake burner on my Maytag gas oven is weak, takes forever to pre-heat/cook. Flames are there but low.

Probably need to replace the igniter. Swap the broil and bake igniters and see if the problem follows the igniter. I just had this happen to mine. Glow bar/igniter appeared to be working properly but was weak causing the regulator valve circuit to keep the flames very low. Swapped ingiters as instructed and problem went with the bad igniter to the broil/top burner.

Burners on top will not light with the pilot lights

To Clean:
IMPORTANT:
Before cleaning, make sure all controls are off and
the oven and cooktop are cool. Do not use oven cleaners, bleach
or rust removers.
1. Remove the burner cap from the burner base and clean
according to “General Cleaning” section.
2. Clean the gas tube opening with a damp cloth.
3. Clean clogged burner ports with a straight pin as shown. Do
not enlarge or distort the port. Do not use a wooden
toothpick. If the burner needs to be adjusted, contact a
trained repair specialist.
4. Replace the burner cap, making sure the alignment pins are
properly aligned with the burner cap.
5. Turn on the burner. If the burner does not light, check cap aligment.

Igniter keeps sparking when it is shut off

Remove each of the burner caps from the cook top and wash in warm soapy water, using a plastic scrub brush to clean any grease or film from all surfaces.

So the same with the burner seat and ignitor knob on the cooktop.

The ignitor keeps striking because it cannot sense there is a flame.

Ignitors won't work

Electric gas igniters sometimes get stuck in one position causing a clicking sound. The clicking sound that you hear is the electric arc that is pulsing from the igniter conductor (wire) to ground (the gas burner). It receives power from the electrical outlet that the stove is plugged into.
Residue from food and sometimes cleaning products may be preventing the igniter from producing a spark (Arc) to the base of the burner. This is a common problem that occurs when the stove has been cleaned or food is allowed to build up. Make sure that the igniter and the burner base are clean and dry. This will help with proper operation. Oven cleaner and a small tooth brush may be used to accomplish this. Another problem with ignition may occur if you have too little (touching) or too much space between the igniter and the base of the burner; it will prevent the burner from igniting. You should only have a little more space than the thickness of a nickel between the burner base and the igniter. A good “blue” arc from the igniter to the burner base is optimal. If this doesn’t work, you may need to replace the electric igniter module. Good luck.

Igniter of back burner dies not click or light

I had the same issue with washing the top with water and cleaning solution. I had arching, eventually one burner failed to ignite. I tried the above solution and it did not work. Remove the ceramic top on the burner that will not ignite. Turn on another working element. Do you see the igniter working?

If so slowly turn on the gas on the failed burner and it will ignite. I'm looking into what component automatically controls the igniting and gas release when the knob is turned on.

When I try to light my jenn air gas cook top it clicks but will not light. But it will light with a match

Your electronic ignitor is bad. You can buy a replacement ignitor where you bought your grill. Just about any hardware store will have a replacement ignitor. They are real easy to replace. There is 1 wire to the back of the ignitor. There is a retaining nut on the switch. Remove the switch and replace with new switch. Plug wire into ignitor, Turn gas on and test ignitor.

Oven won't light, burners and broiler work

Here ya go...

The same method applies to both the broiler and bake manifold:

1. UNPLUG the range and turn the gas off if you have a local gas cut-out valve (it is recommended that you do).
2. Open oven door and remove (if possible). Refer to your owner’s manual to see if there are instructions on how to remove the oven door. Some have spring-loaded locking hinges, while others just lift out. If you cannot figure out how to remove the oven door, use care not to lean on the door or put too much weight on it. A common complaint following any kind of oven maintenance is that the oven door doesn’t shut correctly any longer. This is usually caused by bending the hinges or springs coming loose.
3. Remove the oven racks, and remove the oven pan. (There are usually two screws either in the back or front of the oven holding the pan in place).
4. Remove the Flame Spreader. This is a metal plate on top of the manifold.
5. The igniter will be mounted directly to the gas manifold. Follow the wires that lead to igniter. It will either be plugged into a connector, or be connected together with ceramic wire lugs. Your replacement igniter should come with extra ceramic wire lugs. In the event the plug does not match the one on your range, cut the wires and connect using the ceramic wire lugs. DO NOT use standard wire lugs, they are not heat resistant and will melt.
6. Unplug the old igniter and remove the mounting ***** holding it to the gas manifold.
7. Install new igniter on gas manifold using care not to handle the element on the igniter with your hands. The oil from your hands can cause damage and/or premature failure. The igniter is also considered FRAGILE.
8. Reconnect the wires using the recommendations mentioned in Step 5.
9. Plug in the range, turn the gas valve back on and do a visual test by setting the oven temperature to the desired range. Allow 30 – 90 seconds for the igniter to light the gas. Turn oven off and allow sufficient time to cool. If the oven has only been lit for a minute or so, the cool down period will be brief.
10. Reinstall the flame spreader, oven pan, and racks. Reinstall door if necessary.

NOTE: Most igniters cost around $50. Prices will vary with models. I hope this is the information you needed.

Igniters don't ignite

I would try cleaning them first. Generally, they should be cleaned periodically. If this does not work then check the igniter.
