If you have cable internet then you need to :
* disconnect router from cable modem
* restart the cable modem (power off-on)
* restart the router (power off-on)
* connect cable modem to router WAN port using CAT5 straight cable

If problem still exist try changing the cable to new one. If it still does not work then contact your ISP

Hi Joycie27,

Depending on the brand of router that you're accustimed to, it would be first advisable to see if all the led lights on your router are blinking. Make sure that the WAN port and Lan ports are blinking green (sometimes green and orange mixtures) to indicate connectivity.

Next, take a look at your modem. Make sure that the led lights indicating connectivity to the internet is steady (or blinking if that's how your modem indicates connectivity). Once you can confirm that both are working fine, move on to the next set of actions. If you face a problem in these 2 initial steps, for the router issue, do what Vakhtang suggested. If it's a modem issue, shutdown modem, unplug and replug cables at both ends and then switch modem on.

Of both are working and you still cannot get an IP address, perhaps it;s to do with the link from the lan port to the computer. What i suggest is, make sure that (if you're using a linksys router) the blue (otherwise known as straight through cable) is hooked properly to the ethernet port of the computer and the router. Click on start>run>type cmd and you will come to a command prompt screen.

In it, type in ipconfig /release (with spacing) and wait for the ipaddress to be dropped. The type in ipaddress /renew. This refreshes all connection with etehrnet adapters. IF after this process you still do not get an IP address, perhaps the fault likes with your NIC (network interface card) and not the router, following which, you might have to change. However, also remeber to test your modem and your router to see if this issue canbe solved via those means. All the best.

Brother mfc-7840W not picking up wireless IP address

It is common, mainly because the MFC connection is lost to your PC. Are you able to print or scan from another wireless PC that you have? If yes, contact your network admin or router oem. If no, reset network card. Run the Setup Wireless Wizard. Make sure you have router info such as SSID, Network Security Key, Authentication Method (Open, Shared, WPA/WPA2-PSK), Encryption (None, WEP, AES, TKIP). Enter those info, it must be CASE SENSITIVE. Just in case you dont know your router info, contact your router oem.
For Advanced Users.1. Click your Wireless Icon at Task Tray2. Right-Click your Wireless Network Name3. Select Properties4. Go to Wireless Security Settings5. Take note of the settings that you have there and enter it again on your MFC
Goodluck! If you still need more assistance. Call us 1-877-Brother. :)

Cannot connect e4200 to isp..just loopback address

You shouldn't be connecting the device directly to your ISP, but rather to a modem that is connected to the ISP. The modem will then handle the NAT for your network and your E4200 should be able to pick up a private IP address using DHCP from your modem. Or you can set a static IP on your wireless router as long as that address is available and on the same subnet as your modem. You should also exclude any static IP addresses from being handed out over DHCP so you avoid IP addressing conflicts.

The ip address conflict is likely caused by a manual IP address that is entered into the printer that is overlapping with an automatic address that your router is giving out. Either switch your printer to DHCP so it gets an automatic address, or reserve the address in the router's DHCP list or pick a manual address to assign that is outside of the range of the DHCP server. Most router will start at address XXX.XXX.XXX.100 so if you pick an address between 20 and 40 then you should not have any more issues with conflicts.

If I lock my router, will my IP address be undectectable to any website I visit?

No. But first some clarification...

If you are connected to the LinkSys through a home network your computer will be getting an IP address of either 192.x.x.x or 172.x.x.x. This IP address cannot be seen by servers on the internet. However, the one that is for your household which is provided by your ISP can always be seen. This is how the internet knows where to send the information that you request back to you.

My router is not working. i have to connect it directly to my modem

have you rebooted your modem after you plugged in your router? remember, your modem picks up you computer's ip address and stays with that address until it gets powered off and on. then it gets the ip address of whatever device you have plugged in to. if you plugged your router to your modem without power cycling the modem, then you won't connect other devices wirelessly because it does not recognize the ip address.

Computer cannot connect to internet although it show connected to linksys

you need to check whether the IP address is correct. normally, linksys router gives you the ability of having DHCP. so the IP address must be picked up automatically. check the setting on your TCP/IP and set to automatically obtain IP address.

Linksys wireless camera--viewable if ISP uses dynamic IPs?

Ok, everything by default hands out dynamic ip addresses. If the camera is plugged into the network it will automatically pick up an ip address and you would be able to see it in your router config page. Try attaching the camera to the wireless network and then log into your router and look for attached devices. Let me know if you get stuck and where you get stuck.

Cannot install D-Link router

1. check your wireless adapter TCP/IP settings if its set into "Obtain as IP address Automatically".
2. if the settings is set as Automatic and your not getting IP address then select "Use the following IP Address"
3. use IP address followed to your router address like if192.168.0.1 in router type 192.168.0.2 or192.168.0.3 just check the next address IP in your network.
4. after typing subnet IP will automatically set
5. type the router IP address as your default gateway
6. click OK to save your new settings

Hope this will help

WRT300N Wireless Router change to DHCP

I would set the new wireless router to have a static ip address on the same subnet as the first router.  Then set the DNS and Default Gateway the same as the first router.  When computers connect they should pick up an ip from the first router.
