The screen went black, then it powered itself off, and although the indicator lights say it is receiving power (whether through battery or a/c adaptor - I have tried both), turning it on does nothing. I opened up the back panels and tried it again - the fan will attempt to spin but stop immediately.
So is it refusing to start because the fan needs replacing? I'm not getting a hardware failure beep so I'm hoping it isn't the hard drive.
When you leave it for a while will it start, If it dose dose the cpu fan work if so then It's not your fan, But if it shuts down after a short time it could be that it is over heating, That could be because the fan is not seated properly or heat sink is blocked

Possibly a RAM issue or errors on the
hard drive stopping the display driver from working properly. Remove
power sources, remove RAM and hard drive. See if you get a display
when the power adapter is reconnected. If you do, remove power source
and fit RAM, (if not motherboard may be faulty). Repeat and if still
working, remove power, fit Hard Drive and boot again. Assuming
your OS is Windows Based; Reboot and use safe mode run CHKDSK/F
and when finished check the drivers.
I have the same problem with this computer if you are like me the battery life is also VERY short so it goes dead quite often.
I fixed a laptop a few months back with this problem "or atlest the exact same symptoms" what I did to fix it was take out the ram and the bio battery which rest the the bios and I was able to start it normally.
I however am currently unable to easily find the bios battery on this motherboard. I have been looking for a diagram to no success. I know about computers but dont want to just start taking it appart. If you find the battery or a diagram please let me know.
You need to try to isolate the problem. Try connecting an external monitor to your laptop. Press function screen keys. If you have a picture on your external monitor then you have a video problem - most likely an inverter, although you may need a new screen, unlikely but possible.
If you have no picture then you have a system problem. Disconnect the battery and AC adapter. Remove the memory and reseat. Repower your laptop and see what happens.
1. Remove all USB devices such as printers, mp3 players etc etc.
2. Remove the power-cable and the battery
3. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds
4. Put the power-cable back in but not the battery and none the USB devices.
5. Turn the computer on
Gateway was working good went upstairs came back NOTHING BLACK SCREEN....
My gateway screen was constently black every time I powered on nothing no bios, nostart up no warning..The board has indicating lights to follow the start up power light on, battery light on, then the disk drive....but thats it normaly the harddrive reader light comes on but nothing.... So detached every component and tested individually..... come to find out one of my 2 ram slots is damaged not the chips...this could be your problem..try
Does the hard drive/thinking light blink for a minute or so like it's going through it's normal boot routine without an image? Can you hook up an external monitor? If you take it into a pitch black room do you see any image at all? If it's there but faint then chances are the backlight has a bad connection or is dead and would need to be repaired.
