Question about Whirlpool GH8155XM Microwave Oven

Open Question

GOLDSTAR INTELLOWAVE W/TOASTER - MODEL #TM9040W

When the microwave starts, you can hear the full power come on (as it used to), but after 2 seconds the power slows down. It's like being on the 20-50% power choice.

Then I have noticed a strange smell inside the oven itself. Popcorn setting used to work fine, now I have to run it twice to cook.

HELP! Should I just get a new oven?

SOURCE: Maytag Rangehood Microwave Loud Humming

Sounds like you just fried your magnetron. Normally when they go bad, they make a very loud noise like what you described. The smell concerns me because you may have ruined the waveguide as well. If the magnetron burns through the protective painted surface of the waveguide, the waveguide is ruined. In most microwave ovens this means replacing the entire unit because the waveguide is not replaceable. Putting a new magnetron in a damaged waveguide will result in the same arcing and eventual failure. In addition to the magnetron, the following components are part of the same high voltage network: HV Transformer HV Diode HV Capacitor Magnetron Thermal Cut-Out Any one of these components could have also been damaged. I DO NOT recommend taking any voltage measurements inside the HV network. Potentials of over 4000 volts can be reached and make it very dangerous for the do-it-yourselfer. Taking resistance readings with the unit unplugged is strongly encouraged. If you decide to pursue a repair, inspect the magnetron tip and inside of the waveguide first. If the magnetron is melted and/or there are burn marks inside the waveguide, a new microwave may be a in order. This actually may be a better option than an expensive repair. I hope you find this advice helpful.

SOURCE: magicchef over the range microwave loses display and power

It sounds like your magnetron is overheating and its thermostat is resetting.

Try it with a cup of water in one corner and see if that helps.

Otherwise, most manufacturers have a warranty of several years on the magnetron.

For info on that, visit http://www.magicchef.com/home.jsp

SOURCE: Noise/humming while cooking; especially popcorn; intermitent on other food

Popcorn is heated by a metallic insert in the bag. This causes some additional power consumption by the magnetron. It is no cause for alarm.

SOURCE: microwave not cooking

I would say you have a bad door switch or door switch mount, or your door is loose or out of alignment.

But since it's new, and under warranty, I would contact Goldstar (LG) customer service to have them repair it free.

Contact LG at 1-800-243-0000 or http://us.lgservice.com

SOURCE: Small 10 sec fire in microwave

Whirlpool had a recall on many microwaves due to this problem. Call Whirlpool and see if yours is one of them. My microwave model was mh7140xfb and was on the recall list.

Wattage really doesn't matter much for what you want to use it for. Start with 2 minutes and test. If it's not hot enough add 1 more minute

Microwave doesnt heat food

Microwave not heating problems are the result of one or more of the following problems -

1) Bad fuse
2) Bad diode
3) Bad capacitor
4) Bad transformer
5) Bad magnetron.

You would need to have special equipment to test the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th items.

Goldstar Microwave turntable does not work.

The turntable system consists of the motor, the coupler, the turntable support with rollers, and the tray.

You can see and hear a video of how a turntable motor should sound when you rotate it by hand.

If yours is not set to be off via the control panel, and it won't rotate or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or plastic coupler.

To replace either, you need to unplug power, then remove the bottom cover of the oven.

You can also do that to attach AC voltmeter leads to the leads of the motor. Then run the microwave to see if it has voltage present.

If so, you have a bad motor.

To order Goldstar / L.G. parts, visit Vance Baldwin Electronics.
You'll probably have to call them to find parts for your model.

(If yours is not an LG/Goldstar, please reply back with your brand and model number so we can help you)

If you don;t see the voltage, then you most likely have a problem with the control panel.

We regularly repair such control units for customers nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week with a one-year guarantee.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number) for more information & help.

Microwave LG intellowave

We bought a microwave from a 'seconds' store, minus the manual. Following the advice given above I found the model number and search the LG site for product manuals.

The site isn't intuiative, but if you are patient you can find the manual in PDF form and download it to your computer.

Thanks for the help MicrowaveSvc
