I have a Garmin Nuvi 350GPS. I just bought the DVD for 2009 map updates. I follow all (3) directions, accept the agreement, then I get a message that I have a non recoverable error and the download quits. I have no idea what the error is other than I bought a Garmin.

You can purchase map updates online from Garmin. Here's the link I use: https://my.garmin.com/maps/chooseDeviceType.htm
You'll need to connect your Garmin to your computer with a USB cable. Then go to the Garmin web site and follow their directions. You can buy a single update, or buy a "lifetime" (of the device) subscription to map updates.
Follow the procedures below on how to update your garmin nuvi map for free:
1. Plug one end of the USB cable into your GPS and the other end into your desktop or laptop computer. The GPS device will load the appropriate driver automatically, and a message on your GPS tells you that it is connected to your computer via USB. 2. Open your Internet browser of choice and type in the following web addres: "http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-27 " 3. Download the appropriate version of the software for your computer (Windows or Apple) and Install the WebUpdater by following the wizard (accept defaults). 4. Click "Start," "Programs," "Garmin" and " WebUpdater" to update your firmware and your maps. Periodically check and make sure your software is current.
Seems like a communication problem. Are you using a usb hub between pc and garmin, if yes remove that. have a single connection between the pc and the nuvi. Does the nuvi go into mass storage mode (you see the screen change) if not you have a usb problem with the pc. You may need to install the proper driver from the cd. After. I'm assuming you are using Windows XP. Go to configuration menu double click on system, click on hardware and scroll down to the usb section. Plug in the Nuvi and see if it adds a mass strorage device amoungst the usb devices. No exclamation mark, that's good, if it presents an exclamation mark, right click and select update device driver, try the automatic option, otherwise manual and look for the driver on the dvd. Should go fine from there. If not get back to me.
Fixed. Called Garmin. It seems that version 4.90 FW on the Nuvi 350 (which came shipped on my 350) has a bug where it cannot communicate with the Garmin software either to update maps or update FW. Tech from Garmin e-mailed me a patch that I copied into the Garmin folder on the Nuvi itself, via USB and Windows Explorer. I then rebooted it; the patch installed itself which then allowed the unit to communicate with the map upgrade software and all is well. 2009 map update is now installed and the Nuvi is working fine again. Haven't tried upgrading to newer FW yet; will probably leave well enough alone.
Does it recognise the Nuvi? Are you connecting it through a usb Hub. Are the drivers for the nuvi installed properly? Usually there is a folder named USB, thats where the correct drivers reside, and that's where you tell the computer to look when it asks for the drivers.
