here is a link to a user guide for your machine. the info about setting ring tones is on page 15.
I have mine set on 4 rings, because the fax machine is set on 6 rings. http://www.uniden.com/pdf/DECT1480-2om.pdf
Change the answer machine rings to answer number to less than the fax number of rings to answer or increase the number of rings to answer on the fax machine. Would need exact model number of phone system to give more detail on programming steps. Info should be in manuals of phone system and fax machine.
Unfortunately this machine does not have the facility to change the number of rings before it answers. The following extract from the manual describes how the number of rings is controlled:
Toll Saver Facility
Your unit has a Toll Saver Facility. This means your unit will answer call on the 4th rings if there are no new messages, or on the 2nd ring if new messages have been record. Therefore when you are calling your unit remotely you will know by the 3rd ring if there are no new messages. So you can hang up saving the cost of the call.
I assume you have distinctive ringing since both numbers are on the same line. According to the manufacturer's specs, the fax machine supports distinctive ringing. Set it up for the ring pattern assigned to the fax number and to answer on the first ring. Then it will pick up right away when someone calls the fax machine, and the answering machine will pick up the other number.
Choose how many times the line will
RINGS IS...” ring before the system answers a call.
• Set for 2 to 7 rings, or choose
Toll Saver 2/4 or Toll Saver 4/6.
• When set to Toll Saver 2/4, the system
answers after four rings when you have
no new messages and after two rings
when you do. Toll Saver 4/6 causes the
system to answer after six rings when
you have no new messages and after
four rings when you do.
• During setup, the Message Window will
display the number of rings (8 for Toll
Saver 2/4, or 9 for Toll Saver 4/6).
