My flash drive was run over by a car but it seems only the outer plastic case was damaged. The actual card itself looks fine but get an error after inserting it into a USB port, "USB device not recognized."
Is there a way to put the chip onto another board to retrieve the data or some other way to retrieve the data?
There is no way to retrieve data if your flash drive is broken but you can surely try it on other system and check. But if it does not work then the only way to retrieve data ( if it is very important ) is to contact the website mentioned above and they will do it for you

test whether another flash drive accepts it or not if accepts then change the drive because virus may damaged your flash drive so always use flash drive by taking backup on cd and formatting contineusly virus should not stay in drive
Sometimes when a flash memory stick fails because it was not removed from the USB port properly. If the device is removed by just pulling it out of the USB port, it can cause the flash device to fail, you must click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the Task Bar and select the device you wish to remove and only do so when instructed to do so. When the flash memory device appears to malfunction it maybe possible to restore it by reformatting it. Insert the flash drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management. Then right click on Disk 1 removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted it will indicate that it is Healthy. You need to format the external drive. Format the drive as primary drive and in FAT32. (FAT32 will allow data to be exchanged between MACs and PCs). Insert the external hard drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management. Then right click on Disk 1 removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted it will indicate that it is Health.
Typically, if you have a USB flash stick and are using windows, it works as a plug and play device. IE - when you plug it it - windows will automaticall detect it and you will see - on the tray by your clock in lower right hand of screen - something along the lines of "new hardware detected" then to actually use the stick - go into my computer - and you should see a new drive listed under "Drives with Removable storage" this will be the drive where you save thing that you want saved on the stick.
Lets try : going into "My Computer" and find the drive letter and right click on it. In the drop down menu that will popup you will want to click on the last option that says "properties". In the Properties box you will want to choose the Tools Tab. In this tab you will want to run the Error-checking tool, there is a button that says Check Now.. click this. In the new window you will want to check mark both options (automatically fix file system errors) and (scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors).
You must have all the programs files for the thing your opening. For example, If Im trying to open up google Sketchup from my Flash Drive, I need to have all the files that sketch up uses to run on the flash drive.
