I have a new laptop a compag presario c700. when i am chargeing it up the screen is nice and bright but when i am not chargeing it it goes dull is there a button on here that i can use to turn the screen light up

sounds like either the d/c conveter has died or the battery has died / nicad batteries do reverse voltage and cant be charged any longer, How old is the Battery? if its any older the 3yrs , you may need a new one!
Sounds like the auto-dim in the BIOS is set too low. Fortunately the Compaq R3000 allows you to adjust the brightness right from the keyboard. Hold down the [FN] function key while tapping the [F8] key will brighten the screen, while [FN]-[F7] will dim it. The settings are different for running on AC power and battery, so you must do each individually.
If you are unable to change the contrast with the 'fn' key and the brightness controls, usually represented in the top row of keys as a sun icons, one brightens, one dims. You may have a bad brightness/contrast inverter in your display. It's a small circuit board in the display that controls the brightness. They do fail. You can find them for most models but depending on your technical ability, they can be a little tricky to change.
I have similar problem like julie's. When my pc power line is unplugged, the screen gets dim.
