I have a Windows 98 floppy disk, put it in, prompted me with 3 options: I chose option1 with CD-ROM support and then it comes to a black screen with a:/ and I now I dont know what to type in? Please advise, thank you

Whatever the operating system is is ME, when turning on and it boots up. Trying to get this computer to run good for my dad. It does not have Windows 98 on it and I have a boot up disk for it.

If U already have 98 on the pc, R U trying to have dual boot, recover, or reload 98 instead of 98ME?
The disk U R using is a recovery disk and U will still need the 98 cd to reload. The disk is for repairing or reloading the 98 system and I would suggest that U learn how to use the command structure first before attempting a system repair.
Please explain what the problem is and what U want the system to do. We R very happy to help U get to where U want to go.

I think I understand. First ME is 98, just the third edition. Windows is a Disk Operating System (DOS), all the 98 series had the same attributes, they are dependant on the size of the hard drive and the percentage used.

U really don't have to reload the system, just clean it up and weed out the junk. Every program loaded would leave files in the boot startup management program called MSCONFIG. Use the run command calling the MSCONFIG. Goto the startup tab and click on the button "disable all", reboot. The system will startup whatever programs it actually needs. U can go back later and have the startup the anti-virus or whatever U want.

Next goto the Setup - Control Panel - add/remove programs and uninstall as many programs that U don't want anymore.

Next goto programs - accessories - tools - disk cleanup. Select anything that has size. Let it run.

In the tools section, there is a program called defrag. Run this program as many times as needed untill there is no more red or white dotted spaces on all the drives.

This should restore the pc to good operating condition. For furture reference U should check the msconfig startup after installing programs and run the disk cleanup and defrag every week or so.

Adding more RAM may also help to speed the system up. U can install up to 128MB in the ME and I would recommend doing that. Though U may have to order the RAM online due to the age of the machine. I would recommend that maybe U check the minium system requirements for XP and consider upgrading to XP... Stay away from Vista, it's not ready yet.

    Hope this helps, good luck.

HI, I have a very old compaq cmputer{15 yrs} and cannot download any flash adobe or WI-FIRE. Not very good at piecing things together. Thanks

Educated guess:

That would put the machine at around 1996. Maybe running Windows 95 or 98 on some very old hardware (Pentium 200 MHz MAX).

Even if you could download flash there would not be a version available for your OS anymore.

Sorry, but At 15 years old my best suggestion would be to retire the box and replace it. There is really nothing meaningful you can do with it in today's environment.

The example box below is circa 1995.

Compaq Presario model 5528
The Compaq Presario line was very successful for Compaq. The Presario Model 5528 came with a one-piece integrated monitor and CPU, Intel Pentium processor, 75 MHz, 16 Mb RAM, 34Kb Modem, CD ROM drive, and built in speakers.

I have a compaq presario 7470 PC which currently has windows 98, Iwant to know how can i update it with windows 7 and how muche it'll cost?

Generally the specs for Windows XP machines are good enough for upgrading to Windows 7 without too much cost.

But, Windows 98 was a bit further back in the history of Windows.

You can go to Microsoft.com and use an upgrade advisor to see if Windows 7 will work on your machine.

And, they'll tell you the cost.

Supposed to have 20 GB of memory, only have 1.99GB

Use windows 98 to make a rescue disk (3 1/2 floppy)
use that emergency disk to repartition and format the hard drive. You can probley use fat16.

Swapping a hard drive

You should be able to use that Hard Drive in the Compaq. Once transferred, you might be have to download the drivers to make sure all your devices work. I would recomend that you format the drive and reinstall windows.

Cant perform a quick restore.

what size is yous hard drive and is the windows installing it'self properly and the other problem is have you got all the motherboard drivers if not then the system will become unstable and the hard drive will need to be format back to manufactures default as the files thet were on drive are burrired deep and the only way to get rid of problems is using a program called kill disk then using your win 98 start-up floppy and fdisk the hard drive then partition then format the hard drive then install windows on then all other files for motherboard and graphics and other devices. it should take you about 1 day to get back on line with pc up and running. hope this helps
