What sound card do you have. Not only that but what I would do if I was you is if you have a sound card which is in a pci slot, then go into your bios and disable onboard audio and when you get into windows go into your control panel and see what specific sound device you have, copy and search in google for the right software..and you will also come across useful forums.

Please give more details like Company and Model name of your Laptop or Desktop. Give motherboard and soundcard chipset name if it is an assembled system.
Thanks

Sound problems with Windows XP 2002

The very first thing we should do is to check whether the sound card is installed in your system.
To check open device manager. Here are steps to open device manager
  • Go to the control panel
  • Click on the System Icon
  • Click on the Hardware Tab
  • Click on the Device Manager then
  • Double Click on Sound, video and game controller.
If you do not see Sound and audio controllers, then you have to install it,

Installation of Sound Card.
  • Go to the control panel
  • Click on the System Icon
  • Click on the Hardware Tab
  • Click on the Device Manager then
  • Select the Multimedia Controller or Sound and Audio Control the yellow Question Marks sign on it.
  • Right click on Multimedia Controller and uninstall it.
  • After this go to the top of the device manager and click on scan for hardware changes.
  • Driver installation Wizard start.
  • Browse Your Driver from the Hard Disk and click on next.
  • You can also install the drivers from CD.
Driver will be installed if the problem is still exist. Replace the sound card or have a local tech take a look at the sound card.

HP 520 Notebook. Shuts down before installing new OS.

I agree a clean install is always the better, fresh start J
OK it sounds like missing drivers, what you have to do is create a new installation CD that will load the drivers for your laptop as it boots. I haven’t try this method with windows 7, but I know it works well with Windows XP. Try and create a new Windows XP CD with the drivers see: http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/35/
The start a new installation with this Windows XP CD and reformat you computer, after that you can do a new upgrade to windows 7

Program not running

I just solved it! Thanks to the help of the previous post. The link was no longer good. But here is the new working link:
http://support.selectsoft.com/customer70/ViewCase.asp?Casenum=33&ReturnPage=FAQ

If this link does not work for you, then simply go to:http://support.selectsoft.com and click on the tab for PC/MAC support. It's listed as one of the top ten FAQ's.

OR

Search the term "DK" in their Search Help Database (without bothering to tell them what type of computer you have, OS, software, etc). It should come up right away. This is a fix for Windows XP. Should work for Windows 7 too, if you're running virtual xp (though I haven't tested that yet.) Not sure about vista.

Sidenote: This is a good place to get info on the 3MB virtual memory fix too, which some older programs require. The short version is this...just set your virtual memory (Start/controlpanel/System/Advanced/Performance - Settings/Advanced/Change) to 4000.

DRIVER PROBLEM

If your computer is less than six months old, you can contact the manufacturer and they will help.

Secondly, the new devices for sound and video are mounted, especially on laptops, on a special high definition bus (or something like that).

I had a similar problem with HP laptops whereby this advanced bus was easily detected by Vista but I had to install XP and the sound went kaput. The only way to solve was to install this driver patch specially prepared by the manufacturer.

That is why you have to contact the manufacturer.
