Maybe !  I would call tv service company or go to craigslist and ask about minimum service fees. You should not have to pay more than 50.00 to get expert opinion. If something simple, you could find an honest guy who may charge no more than 75-100.00 for blown fuses or cap replacement.

When i switch my tv on it has a habit of switching itself off. The red light will still be on and a little green light below it flashes. some days it does it somedays it doesnt. Some times it does it once...

The television is switching itself off to protect itself because there is a problem with it. It may be a bad capacitor, which is usually the case but you have to catch it before it gets any worse. Because then the television will switch itself off and not come back on. The light will just continue to blink and on top of replacing the bad capacitor the entire board the capacitors are attached to might need to be replaced as well as the power supply and main board. Please do not keep turning your television on while it needs repair because it will put itself into a coma and contact a service provider asap.

Tv switches off after 5 mins

There might be three or more reasons for this:
1) The sleep timer may be on causing the TV to turn off after a preset time.
2) If sleep timer is on and no signal from the remote is received for a preset time (Samsung: 15 minutes) the tv will turn itself off.
3) The TV may have been turned on automaticaly with "On Timer". If so, and no signal is received for a preset time (Samsung: 3 hours) the tv will turn itself off.
4) A fan is not working or a vent is blocked causing the TV to overheat and turn off.
For 1) thru 3), go to the "setup" menu and make sure "sleep timer" and "On Timer" are turned off.

Not expensive but very hard to find the exact problem.

Both are not the same problem.
Mostly, your case related IR module problem.

the other below, yours are poewr board or thermostat problem.

Most likely the lamp has failed. The problem with 6 blinks is that when the lamp failed most likely the thermal sensor for the lamp also failed. Most likely you will need a qualified sony tech. to repair.
