Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console

Bought a new DVD drive

OK my xbox was not reading any games or dvds so i ordered a new DVD drive after making sure it wasn't the magnet problem. My original drive was a Hitachi, my new one is a Samsung-Toshiba, well long story short after I installed it I learned that the new drive need to be reflash. my question is, is there any way that someone of very limited knowledge about the whole thing be able to do this my self and could some post a link to show me how to do it. I'm not trying to pirate games or anything i just want my XBOX to work.

If you had bought the exact same drive as the one that came out all you would have had to do was change the circuit board from one drive to another.Byt because you havent your gonna have to use xbox 360 toolbox V4.0 and take the security key out of the Hitachi and flash it into the samsung which is alot more indepth.

Xbox 360 will not read games but plays DVD and CD

It would be best to take it to someone who mods them as they will know if it is the correct drive and if it is running modded firmware(as they are the guys who do this regularly) and if the drive has been set up correctly. They also may be able to extract the drive key and reflash the original(or modded if you preferred) firmware for the drive.

I changed out my xbox 360 dvd drive with 1 that had red ring cuz my dvd drive broke. and it worked but i can only play dvds and cds no games it says to put the disk in to an xbox 360. please help im going...

First make sure both drives are the same .
Find your old DVD drive and remove the P.C. board.
Then install it in the consoles drive that had red ringed

the drives pc board is married to the box and can not
be separated in order to recognize games and not get banned
on xbox live.

I just bought a new disc drive for my xbox 360 and installed it but now it reads all my games as dvds, did I forget a step or do something wrong installing or is my new drive worthless?

The motherboard and the firmware for the DVD drive are paired. You cannot simply replace the drive with another. In order to properly replace the drive you must have the KEY from your old drive's firmware to input into your new drive so the games can be de-coded and signed software work properly.

There are tutorials and hardware available on the internet to do this.

My xbox360 wont read the gaming disc or dvds, it doesnt have the red rings. It worked earlier and then just stopped. Its done this once before.

Your DVD drive is going bad.you can either send it in to Microsoft to have them replace it or crack open your xbox and get the part number off of the DVD drive itself and order a new one. if you order a new one, unsolder the circuit board from your old drive and solder it into your new one. IT IS IMPERATIVE you get the same drive as the one your xbox has. The xbox has like 4 different ones they use now.

"put in dvd"

and its manufacturer is samsung....

this is a generic problem with all the
xboxes, 80 percent have got a malfunctioning drive in it.

to fix follow these instructions
http://www.xbox360gamesystem.com/how-to-repair-xbox-360-when-there-is-a-dvd-drive-problem/

or get the thompson drive instead of the korean made(samsung)
they produce good harddisks and monitors though....

good luck

Bought new dvd drive benq 6038

LOL well 9 months later, I'll answer your question. EVERY Xbox360 dvd drive is "married"to it's motherboard. The communication between the drive and motherboard is encrypted with a key (aka- DVD-key) IF you don't flash the dvd-key from the original drive to the replacement then there is no way the Xbox will ever be able to play anythngg other than music and dvds. You NEED the correct key to encrypt/decrypt the 360 games so the motherboard can understand it.

Xbox 360 doesnt read games but reads dvds

Your laser is bad in the drive. When it comes to reading games, DVd's, music cds, it requires a different strength from the laser in your dvd rom in order to read them. If it can't read all types then the laser is definitely bad and you can either replace just the laser or the whole drive.

Xbox reads game as DVD

When this happens this means that your laser lens is going bad. You can order a new lens off of Ebay and replace it or order a new DVD drive of the same model and replace the circuit board with the one in your current drive. The reason you need to replace the board if you order a new drive instead of just a laser lens is because the firmware of the DVD drive is mated to the motherboard. You can not just replace the whole drive and get it to work.

It just keeps saying "open tray"

I've figured it out!All you need to do is make sure there's no game inside of your 360 (for this to work it need's te be turrn it off) take the HDD off the top of your console then turn it back on (without the HDD) then put the HDD back on top of your 360 and put your game back in.If it doesn't work the first time,do it twice or thrice or more.
