OK my xbox was not reading any games or dvds so i ordered a new DVD drive after making sure it wasn't the magnet problem. My original drive was a Hitachi, my new one is a Samsung-Toshiba, well long story short after I installed it I learned that the new drive need to be reflash. my question is, is there any way that someone of very limited knowledge about the whole thing be able to do this my self and could some post a link to show me how to do it. I'm not trying to pirate games or anything i just want my XBOX to work.
If you had bought the exact same drive as the one that came out all you would have had to do was change the circuit board from one drive to another.Byt because you havent your gonna have to use xbox 360 toolbox V4.0 and take the security key out of the Hitachi and flash it into the samsung which is alot more indepth.

It would be best to take it to someone who mods them as they will know if it is the correct drive and if it is running modded firmware(as they are the guys who do this regularly) and if the drive has been set up correctly. They also may be able to extract the drive key and reflash the original(or modded if you preferred) firmware for the drive.
The motherboard and the firmware for the DVD drive are paired. You cannot simply replace the drive with another. In order to properly replace the drive you must have the KEY from your old drive's firmware to input into your new drive so the games can be de-coded and signed software work properly.
There are tutorials and hardware available on the internet to do this.
Your DVD drive is going bad.you can either send it in to Microsoft to have them replace it or crack open your xbox and get the part number off of the DVD drive itself and order a new one. if you order a new one, unsolder the circuit board from your old drive and solder it into your new one. IT IS IMPERATIVE you get the same drive as the one your xbox has. The xbox has like 4 different ones they use now.
LOL well 9 months later, I'll answer your question. EVERY Xbox360 dvd drive is "married"to it's motherboard. The communication between the drive and motherboard is encrypted with a key (aka- DVD-key) IF you don't flash the dvd-key from the original drive to the replacement then there is no way the Xbox will ever be able to play anythngg other than music and dvds. You NEED the correct key to encrypt/decrypt the 360 games so the motherboard can understand it.
Your laser is bad in the drive. When it comes to reading games, DVd's, music cds, it requires a different strength from the laser in your dvd rom in order to read them. If it can't read all types then the laser is definitely bad and you can either replace just the laser or the whole drive.
When this happens this means that your laser lens is going bad. You can order a new lens off of Ebay and replace it or order a new DVD drive of the same model and replace the circuit board with the one in your current drive. The reason you need to replace the board if you order a new drive instead of just a laser lens is because the firmware of the DVD drive is mated to the motherboard. You can not just replace the whole drive and get it to work.
I've figured it out!All you need to do is make sure there's no game inside of your 360 (for this to work it need's te be turrn it off) take the HDD off the top of your console then turn it back on (without the HDD) then put the HDD back on top of your 360 and put your game back in.If it doesn't work the first time,do it twice or thrice or more.
