The PC is not recognizing the device? Are you running Windows Vista? if so, go to Sandisk's website for software. If you are running windows ME or 98, go to Sandisk's website for drivers.

These are the most common methods for recovering Sandisk's Sansa Mp3 Players. I have been almost universally successful in recovering Sansa players using one or a combination of these methods. These methods do not work if you are having synchronization or music format issues - they are for recovering a player that will not power up, freezes, flashes, is not recognized by the computer, and a host of other issues.
Reset the Sansa Player first. On most models, restart is done by holding the power button in for 15 seconds or longer. Check your specific manual to be sure. The manuals are available from the Sansa website if they have been misplaced. Download the Sansa Recovery Tool from the Sansa website. Format - Erases Everything: Connect your Sansa player to the computer and open Windows Media Player. Click on the Sync tab. Pull down the drop down menu underneath the Sync tab by moving your cursor over the Sync tab and left clicking on the little black arrow underneath the Sync tab. Highlight "Sansa 1GB" (wording may vary slightly), and then select "Format." - this should erase everything. Firmware Upgrade- Erases Everything: Get the latest firmware upgrade from Sansa - it updates the firmware and erases every song in the player all at once. Note: this method doesn't work if already have the latest firmware. Go to this website and click "Firmware Updater" to find out: http://www.sandisk.com/DriverDownload/driverList.asp If these fail, then: Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard. If you get the problem where MTP Device keeps popping up continuously, uninstall the “MTP Device” by going to Start à Control Panel àSystem à Hardware à Device Manager (you computer may vary slightly, depending on Windows Version). You may have to restart your computer after each of these methods to get them to work properly. Disconnect your Sansa player BEFORE shutting down your computer. -Tha Mp3 Doctor

1. First, check your device setting up on MTP or MSC? Turn on device, go to "settings" , press down or up to find "USB Mode", you can see the check mark at MTP (auto detect) or MSC mode. Change to another usb mode.
2. You have 2 ways to delete songs:
2.1. Delete songs by device: play songs, press down (sub menu) until you meet "delete song", select it and yes
If you delete all items in device: Settings, Format, and yes
2.2. Delete songs by computer: plug device to computer, double click on device icon, Music folder, and delete songs you want. If you don't see songs in there, unplug the device from pc, and then change USB mode, and plug device to pc to delete.
o delete songs from your device follow the steps below You have to make sure that the device is on MSC mode...then make sure your device is plug in to the computer..Then go to programs - accesories - windows explorer, find the SanDisk in my computer, go to media, music and delete them from there. Either under sync panel in your windows media
player it will show your music when it's connected. just click the plus
signs for what song you need to get rid of, right click and click
To format it..on your device..go under..menu, setting and there should
be a format option option there..let me know if that doenst work for

Am not sure which of the 2 actions we did solved the problem...but we installed the CD that came with it (my daughter has a Sansa C260 and her CD was already installed in the computer and we thought I didn't have to install mine). But we resorted on installing mine too in case it would help with the problem, and then we re-loaded all the songs into my Sansa C250 at a slower pace, although I really don't know if the quicker pace did cause the problem. But now my Sansa C250 is now able to record any song correctly.
You can manually delete the music thru My Computer.
My Computer>Device Name (c250)>Media>Music You can see all of the music by albums and delete what you want.

I actually had this exact same problem with my Sansa m230, and I was running from place to place just looking for an answer; I actually stumbled across it through some related searches here on this site ('reset' specifically), and I tried it out and it worked for me.
The Sansa m230 has two USB interface modes, and choosing one will make your system recognize the device differently than if the other is chosen, so songs that were uploaded using the USB setting 'Auto Detect' (which tells the thing to use something called 'MTP' mode) won't be visible again when it's connected using 'MSC' mode, and vice-versa.
Simply put: Unplug the little bugger, go into the USB settings, and choose whichever of the two settings isn't already selected, and plug it back in.
For the future, I'm going to erase everything from one mode and put it back in through the other mode, just so this doesn't happen again.
