The motor which rotates inside along with the hard discs and the spindle might have got loosened
If this is in warranty then get it replaced , other wise you might need a new one
I also dropped mine some time ago and it made a very harsh sound , on taking it to a hardware expert who found after opening it that the spindle was loose so after tightening the screws it all started working fine but sometimes it is so bad that replacement is the only option

I have a SimpleTech 320 GB external hard drive. It suddenly stopped appearing in My Computer. When I turn it on, it makes a repetitive sound that seems like a warning of some kind...what is it? It sounds...

Hello and welcome to the TSF. If the external drive has provisions for external power you'll need to plug that in, usb ports cannot power a 320 drive. If the drive has 2 usb plugs (one for additional power) you'll need them both plugged in, and I would suggest that the laptop should also be running off of external power rather than battery. If you disconnect the usb drive or any other usb device without first stopping the device then sometimes the usb ports will fail to recognize the device when it is plugged back in, a simple reboot should do the trick. You can also check in the device manager for any yellow exclamation marks on your usb host conrtoller and see if the driver for it is in need of an update.
Any drivers you need should be on simpletech's website, though normally you should not need any for a usb hdd. If the power cord/a/c adaptor is faulty or the hdd is loose in the enclosure(thus not making good contact) then you should pester simpletech to either replace the cord, a/c adaptor,or unit, and see if there are instructions on how to take apart the enclosure and reseat the drive/connections.

Simpletech hard drive wont turn on

Don't panic! But it certainy sounds like your hard drive is damaged my friend. Hard drives are very, very dilicate pieces of machinary. The disk is paper thin and any sudden jarring, especially dropping them creates a warp in the drive. Unplug it to prevent further damage. THE SOUTION: In many cases you can have the data retrieved from your hard drive by using this online company that I highly recommend:

Simpletech 500 GB Hard Drive not working

The red light is an indicator of drive failure. The fall it took, especially if the drive was on at the time, could easily cause the drive to break something internally so that it will not function. I found SimpleTech drives to fail pretty easily, even when you're not dropping them. That's been my experience, anyway.

Data recovery is a very expensive proposition. If the hard drive doesn't respond to the interface as normal, they have to be pulled apart and data extracted from the internal platters. This isn't something you can do without a full safe room (dust-free, wearing special suits and all) because any dust can ruin the platter. Since it's so involved, it's usually really, really expensive. Generally, most people don't bother when it reaches that point unless it's business files (like all of your financial data, for instance).

However, if it's something you really need that bad, DriveSavers is one of the best:

Odd clicking noise...

That clicking sounds if ever loud enough is one annoying symptoms of failed disc. When it accidentally drop the reader may come off the disc. It sad to say but you may consider to change your hard disc.

Drop

ok the clicking sound usually means the hard drive has failed....this might sound odd but try wrapping the hard drive in a plastic bag and popping it in the freezer overnight......then connect it to your pc.....if it is recognised by the pc transfer all the data you can from it to your pc( once the drive warms up again it might not work)....failing that you need professional help with data recovery....be aware this is not cheap though

SimpleTech 320GB Hard Drive- unable to detect the device

I had a similar problem with a SimpleTech 250g Pininfarina USB drive.
I went through the drivers, the power supply, the USB cables, and the various
computers, USB cards and Operating systems.
Finally I opened the case and found the disk drive was mounted too far
forward, causing the IDE connector to barely touch. I loosened the mount screws,
slid the drive back towards the connector, tightened everything down and it works.
